I intend starting my first serious major mod next week and I need to know if I weld 2 base units together weather the welds will hold on the units I have been told that base units are normally either ally or steel what i need to know is if the steel is thick enough to withstand a mig welder welding them together and if I cut the ends of the units like so

    [__________ ___________]

using a angle grinder would the metal be up to it toughness wise or is it going to buckle and split and crack warp etc.

    any ideas one

    thanks

    Ryu

I dont think the bases are strong enough, instead why not you take the frames and weld them together, then cut off as much as you want

angle grinders work fine as long as you dont touch too much, they really eat your case up fast, i don't know about welding 2 together could go terribly wrong, show some real drawings :D

My angle grinder goes through steel computer cases like butter. Just be careful with it, the heat thats generated by using it can make the surrounding material a horrible colour and warp it in places. Do small cuts at a time and you should be fine.

how thick is the base metal? will it be load bearing? whats the metals gauge all of this stuff would help.It might work better to weld the frames together and then just weld or bondo the sheet metal joint
