I've noticed around the fora that more and more threads are being typed in txt speech. I don't know about you all, but to me that is one of the most annoying things to read. And what I notice the most, that I allmost never really know what the poster is trying to say. I loved the time when everyone used the same language. Or is it that time consuming or difficult to type in regular English? And this inspired me for this poll, How annoying do you all find this newly formed language? EDIT: I can't seem to find the "create poll checkmark" can anyone help me out on this? Tnx a lot EDIT2: Clean up after HEX added the poll; Thank you!
It annoys the hell out of me. Pushing a key isn't expensive or hard to do. Grr. * About the worst thing around
What are you classing as txt speach here? Are we talking shortening every word/stripping vowels from a sentance, or things like "tho" "u" etc?
Its not to bad for shorting words every now again. LOL and IMO and things like this are ok, but l337 sp33k 1s v3ry ann0y1ng 1 d0n7 kn0w h0w any1 can r3ad i7 l37 a 10n3 7yp3 i7! I rest my case Regards GiGo
tax it and then we'll see what happens i hate it as well, but certain things like LOL and AFIK etc has entered in to my forum typing (as well as bad grammer/spelling and keyboard usage) but as for a froum like this that is multi-national and everyone is expected to write in english most of the time, i can see it getting annoying for people outside of the UK to understand what is being said, i find it hard some times even when people from other countires use their local slang.
Can't be doing with it, you've got a full QWERTY (or equivalent) keyboard in front of you so why bother? What really grates me is the shortcuts, that aren't actually shortcuts. Same amount of letters, different spelling. e.g "lyke"
I can deal with 'lol' (although I generally use haha) and 'brb' but everything else does my head it. Particulary '***'. I don't even use shorthand when texting for two reasons, 1) It's just as quick to use predictive text 2) If i'm worried about not having enough characters then i'll ring. Texting is for short messages such as "That time is fine. Catch you later", not full blown conversations.
i think my main problem with text speech as such is that anyone who uses it i just cant really take serious whatsoever...or should i say whatsoeva?? :O
This place is a forum - by its nature, discussion is not instant and therefore people will have some time to create their thread or type a response. By this token, there is really no excuse for typing in the sort of incoherent babble that I've seen on a few (thankfully rare) occasions. Stripping every vowel and piece of punctuation from a sentence may save a few precious seconds, but it comes at the expense of others' time. In the case that I have to decode a post which seems to have been written by someone with a broken keyboard, I discard it and move onto the next thread. If thread starters want other users to take their time to respond, then they should take their time to make the thread legible, concise and coherent in the first place.
You've taken the words out of my mouth, this is exactly how I would describe it, I take anyone's post in txt speak to be not worthy and most likely skip it if I can't make head nor tail of it, I usually automatically assume that anyone who types constantly in text speak as a 12 year old who thinks it's cool. So, it's the worst thing around, mobiles are seriously a bad influence on children and their language, when I was in year 11 I was doing some marking of year 7 Geography work (my teacher considered my good enough at Geography to do this ) and ubelivably, some of the kids were writing by shortening words, such as you becoming "u" and tomorrow becoming "tmw", which is really bad. They should either allow more typing space in text messages (the current 160 characters isn't enough) or change it so that mobiles were like a qwerty keyboard, although I guess this will mean bigger phones.
I hate it. Some of it is OK, such as AFAIK and IIRC are ok with me, as it is obvious what they mean. When ppl tlk lk ths is what annoys me the most. If you can't be bothered to type properly, then it probably isn't worth reading. I always spell properly and never shorten my words on msn, or when texting, because predictive texting is easier, and if I hate reading it, why should somebody else have to? I bet everybody has been double checking their spelling and grammar before hitting the post button.
About the worst thing around. I absoutley hate it. and can i ask, why is 1337 up there? thats got nothing to do with it
I think there's a distinct (and acceptable) distinction between frequently used Internet acronymns and text speak. IIRC, AFAIK, LOL, WTF.. emoticons etc have become almost words in their own right over the years. You then get the parodies like pr0n, O RLY?!, teh and the like which are always used in the context of their creation; as a gag. TBH, even words like 'cos and gonna are perfectly acceptable due to the fact they are pretty much how people would talk in real life. I rarely sit down and 'write' a response as it's very much like how I'd talk down the pub. However, I do try to write it with good grammar and spelling. However m8, thnk u, 2, ne1 (a personal bugbear), b, b'cos so on and so forth, have none of the above acceptabily or inherent usefulness of the former and serve little purpose used on the Internet (where time, cost or lack of writing space are a factor) execept to encourage the stereotype that kids today just can't be bothered to learn proper English.
