can deal with it when its in a text, even then i tend to not abbreviate then, y annoying. would it really hurt to tap a few extra keys?! and also to perhaps even word your sentences so that they are NOT ambiguous! the worse situation is when people use ambiguous abbreviations. o well!
I like lol, lmao, and btw, and thats about it. "lol" and "lmao" have been around long enough I accept them. "btw" is one I consider pretty useful, and acceptable because it is a true three letter acronym. If something actually saves someone a little bit of time, I consider it more acceptable, but I will usually make some sort of remark. I like "K" instead of "OK" (I hate "ok" or just "k") because "K" is something I would actually say. 'cause is another one of my favorites, I dislike 'cos or b'cos. I generally try to type with proper English, like using full words and proper capitalization and puncuation. L J
I always use full English sentences and proper punctuation in my text messages... but you have to admit that language constantly changes... for the worse and better. I'm waiting for newspeak to catch on... it'll be doubleplusgood. Damned Orwellian novels in me head. Noes!
I think roflol is somthing you do after drinking too much. When its lightly and I stress lightly used its ok, but wh3n it g3ts 0v3rus3d 1ik3 this, it r3a11y piss3s m3 0ff. <- that was harder to type than plain english.
Acronyms are okay most of the time...missing out letters from words due to lazyness is just irritating to be honest. <A88>
I sed it doesn't mather me. But I mean that on this forum. We have the occasional "thx", "lol", "omg", "imo", "tbh". Thats just fine with me! I do hate: no1, 4ever, .. (the number language). But it does get annoying with it turns into phonetical (sp?) typing or into "1337 speak". But overal I think its still quite good on this forum. Sometimes I get annoyed with the real british sayings, because I don't get them since I'm not native english. But thats "ok" though, I just need to learn them! I personally only use "thx" "tbh" "imo" "lol" (at least I think I only use those!). I try to type in perfect english, since its the best exericise in english I can get! L
[About the worst thing around] I really hate this text speech as you so gently call it. I get annoyed about missing punctuation, missing capital letters, and bad grammar. What I noticed though, is that it's most British people who seem to have trouble writing in their native language...
Yeah, it does seem to have passed on to a lot of people's real grammatical and literal ability in that a lot of my friends now can't seem to spell even some simple words because they're used to shortening them down to as few letters as possible. It kinda sickens me in a way that they're so ignorant of it as well, and that they don't seem to care when I point it out. Today's kids eh? <A88>
i tend to use acronyms, 'imo' 'wtf' 'lol' etc a fair bit but for the most part use full english it rly anoys me wen u c ppl typ lik this i mean surely they spend more time trying to work out how to remove letters from words than just typing out the full version, i know it took me longer to type the second line than the first 'teh' is really annoying when people do it on purpose (and obviously not in a humourous manner) but i find myself typo'ing it all the bloody time and i just cba to go back and change it
I don't really like it, but I tolerate it. All my text messages are in full English, but when on IRC, I have to confess punctuation and grammar often go out the window, though I still try to avoid the TLAs! What do others think about it on IRC/IM where the conversation is very fast moving? You pretty much have to do it, else you'll never get a word in egdeways!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! bashing guys while using reprehensable spelling and gramar to do it. Ohhhh sometimes the world just spells IRONY to me Ok so I skimmed over most of the site because it was too terrifying to actualy read, but that was horrible. I dont follow english punctuation rules to the letter when I post, and sometimes I do a spell check sometimes I dont. Im alright with acronyms as listed above, but 'soz wot r u doin 4 frydy' drives me up a wall. *edit* nice avatar too
Some acronyms have a very useful "sign" function in forum posts. 'IMO' shows it's a personal view, not gospel. 'TBH', less formal than 'To be honest', and, like 'IMO', perhaps not so condescending in print, and again showing a personal opinion is coming. 'YMMV' (your mileage may vary) has its place after a short explanation of possible pitfalls, and 'WFM' (worked for me) is a fair answer when you suspect the addressee hasn't done it right. But comments like, "ive just dropped my monitor lol" seem a bit...silly?
