Ubuntu 8.04 is out tomorrow (which is also my birthday :hehe:)

Is anyone going to upgrade to it, or are most ubuntu'ers already using the earlier release candidates.

But my main reason for thread is to get peoples opinions on linux at the moment.

    Is it good or bad?

Most linux distrobutions at the moment are insanely easy to use, using a package manager is easier to install a program in most cases than it is on windows.
They are also looking fabulous now.

So is this the way linux should be going, so more and more people and average users can use it. Or should it be left to people who know what they are doing and whats going on behind the sexy gui.

I've been running the beta since it came out and am highly impressed with it. It took some work to get vmware installed so I can run windows xp for windows apps and games but everything else has been pretty smooth. The wireless drivers have made huge advances from the first time I installed redhat some 6-7 years ago.

Already on it and very happy with the progress, everything just seems more 'connected' this time around. And finally a decent torrent client included by default!

Currently using 7.10 on this desktop, 8.04 on my Eee since Alpha 5, and Mythbuntu* 8.04 on my HTPC.
Only problem I've had with 8.04 was around Alpha 6, where an update killed libc6, but that was fixed within hours.

Desktop will join them in a week or so, after my vacation (Any upgrade gotchas should have been stomped on by then)

*As the name suggests, Mythbuntu = Ubuntu-based MythTV build.

I think I'll stay in the real men league ;) and keep on using Gentoo...

Although I agree, user friendly Linux is the future...

Might give mythbuntu a go, got all the bits for a myth box just not the time to set it up properly.
For my day to day use though i'll stick with Debian, etch on my server and lenny on my desktops had a few problems with lenny just after it became testing but its settled down to more than usable install.

i broke gutsy pretty bad a few weeks ago, so i wiped my hard drive and installed the hardy beta. other than the pretty new wallpaper i really didn't notice much of a difference. the only real updates seem to be the inclusion of some different default programs.

I'm still using Breezy Badger (w/ fluxbox) on my aging laptop. Maybe I'll upgrade to 8.04, since 5.10 isn't supported anymore.

Question about 8.04 is the new Nvidia GFX chipset supported? I could never get 7.10 to work on my new system.

@saxman - yes. it installed fine on my g92 gts.

@uncertiangod - the default driver didn't support the new cards in the 7.10 installer, and the default install cd had no commandline installer. you couldn't get the system to a state where you could install the nvidia driver by using the regular installer cd. you had to download the alternate installer and do a commandline install, then wget the drivers from the nvidia site and install them, and then get x working.

it was a well-documented incompatibility between the ubuntu installer and the g92 chipset. and the installer is a part of ubuntu. if you can't install the os, it is a problem.

yes i had an issue with the live CD. I tried an alternate CD and I attempted to fix that way and I messed something else up along the way and was a bad day altogether.

Well first of all happy birthday Matticus. :D:clap:
I tried the beta of 8.04 server some time ago, but for some reason it was not able to manipulate the MBR on my main harddrive so that it would run dual boot. But I will give it another try some time soon now that it is off beta.

Haha and just as I downloaded the 7.10 yesterday. Oh well, it's not like it took for too long, but it's just exactly my luck with these linuxthings :)
