Hi Everyone, Recently installed Ubuntu on my lappy (11.10 i think). Planning a file server based on a linux disrto in the near future and i am trying out the basics on file sharing. I ticked the box in personal file sharing preferences to share my home folder over a network. Now how do get windows to see those files? Cheers Ben
You need to install "samba", I think. (The Ubuntu forums may be a better place to get a definitive answer)
Back in the day, you'd install Samba server and configure it to share files across the network. These days however, it's all totally changed - many distros do this stuff for you automagically, and configuration may vary wildly between distros. As above, some Ubuntu resources may be your best bet for this.
Thanks for the quick replies. I managed to install samba and by using another samba program from the ubuntu 'software shop' also managed to stream some files to windows 7. I had to make sure windows had both read and write access otherwise it would not see the files. I am gradually getting my head round it. Thanks for you help!
Yes, I can imagine that Linux permissions would screw up Windows sometimes... Good to see that you have got it working! Now for the full works - login server, proxy, web server, MySQL database...
