Anyways I have a laptop that I use like a media/download server. The problem is that it freezes up if you leave it run for more than a couple of hours. By freezes up I mean that it will show the same screen,no updating, like the time will read 10:34 on Friday when it's really 9:07 on Saturday. That's a huge problem because it needs to run 24/7.

So is it a hardware problem with it overheating or a software problem? BTW thanks for your help in advanced

    The obvious questions are:

    • What are your Laptop specs?
    • What version of Ubuntu are you using?
    • Did it freeze before you decided to use it for a server?

laptop specs: Pentium M 2ghz, 1.5 Gb ram, 80Gb hdd

    Ubuntu 10.04

I never really left it sit for long periods of time before it was a server and it only freezes when you leave it sit for long periods of time.

I use Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my desktop and it runs all day with no problems. I don't believe it has ever froze. I would of asked you if you have network issues but Ubuntu keeps working even when my wifi disconnects.

My un-educated guess would be that Laptops are not built to stay on for long periods. A few hours here and there. Some newer ones with efficient CPU and Ram are going to be okay, maybe. I would suggest your hardware is overheating but I don't know which parts. What model number and make is your laptop?

It's a Thinkpad z60t which is pretty old. It may be a cooling issue but I keep it raise off my desk and have a 80mm fan blowing cool air under it.

my guess is that something is scheduled to do something after a certain period of time, which confuses it. open system monitor and look at what it was doing when it froze.

on a separate note, there's no harm in updating to 10.10.. i'm using it now on an old hp laptop and its as stable as ever :)

It seems to only freeze when there is no mouse movement. With WINE I downloaded a program that automatically moves the mouse every X seconds. I'll run it overnight tonight to see if that fixes the problem.

have you tried cleaning out the dust from the cooler, if it's old you may have a carpet blocking it. causing it to overheat

Add "acpi=off" too the kernel line in grub and restart.

It sounds like your problem is related to your system going in to low power mode or a sleep condition thus why the auto mouse program keeps the system alive. acpi controls this, by disabling acpi you loose some of the hardware's power management but it might help stabilise the system.

It can't be low power because it's plugged in 24/7, and the auto mouse mover didn't work the greatest, every 6 hours it still freezes

I think I'm just going to try to find a cheap desktop and hope that that solves my problems

Not low power but a reduced power consumption mode, throttling the cpu for example.

    did you try disabling acipi?

I can't right now, I'm 200 miles away from the laptop and my mom doesn't know how to do any of that stuff.

I think if I find the right desktop for the right price I'm just going to buy that instead of dicking around with this laptop idea. It really sucks because it's not a bad laptop.
