after looking on the site for these and also the sticky on this thread im a bit confused as to the difference between them. is it just the look of the desktop or is there more to it. also is this a good version to try for a linux noob. the sticky said it was easy and with xp not installing for some reason right now im left with vista as my main os, and i dont really want to do that incase i get a problem.
Ubuntu = Gnome Window Manager Kubuntu = KDE Window Manager Xubuntu = XFCE Window Manager All come with their specific feel and look, and performance... All Ubuntu version are good for starters... Very low learning curve, especially if you are used to Windows...
As with most other people i cant go for the color of Ubuntu so i went for the faster XUbuntu (also made with GTK?)One note of warning . MP3&DVD will NOT work strate away and will need additional work to fix.
Now AJ, if you call that work, you haven't had to do some serious jobs on any PC It requires a google, an addition of rep's and a apt-get
Now Glider you must of realised by now that getting people to use google first is massive amount of work. I picked up a book in pc word on ubuntu and now have full mp3/ipod and dvd working (of sorts got no open gl drivers installed !)
Yeah, but I'm still a bit naive... But forgive me, I'm one of the gifted few that choose to compile OpenOffice from sources Code: laptop ~ # genlop -i openoffice * app-office/openoffice Total builds: 2 Global build time: 13 hours, 1 minute and 55 seconds. Average merge time: 6 hours, 30 minutes and 57 seconds. Info about currently installed ebuild: * app-office/openoffice-2.0.3 Install date: Sun Oct 29 05:52:15 2006 USE="firefox gtk java pam -binfilter -cairo -eds -gnome -kde -ldap -odk -xml" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
oh man you suck, i can't even get hello world to compile. I think i need to LFS my drive to to get it working on my foxconn.
Weird thing is, I have opengl installed, and xine plays dvd's without problems... So I don't quite get your problem...
BTW im trying to use the onboard sis chipset. Anywho, i working throught the ubuntu forums and its say to select the open gl drivers under the video setting but mine says no open gl no xvmc etc. Sorry for hijacking the thread ive got all these issues because i kept my home directory.
You have the correct modules loaded in your /etc/xorg.conf? All the packages downloaded? IIRC setting up opengl on my Gentoo system was as simple as "emerge -av opengl" and a X-org conf edit...
I must have the worst luck because no version of linux has ever installed open gl for anyof my hardware so the cpu craps itself trying to draw the graphics. H.T.F do i get open gl working on SIS661fx chipset?
You don't at the moment, so it seems SIS refuses to release proper drivers or information... Read it here
bloody live cd doesnt work anymore lol.. it says it cant access TTY and the job control is turned off whatever that means.. now the live cd did work so this is a bit odd.. btw it was ubuntu i went with in the end..
I followed a link from there but one minit it says the 661 is supported then it says it isn't. @Martin What do you mean the live cd doesn't work? what version are you using?
its ubuntu 6.10. i downloaded it only yesterday and it worked then, i'll try it on another pc tomorrow as it must be something ive done
i've asked around as well, and everybody tells me to use regular ubuntu. almost all of the how-to's are written for ubuntu, whereas the others are hit and miss. i ordered the Dapper Drake official CD from shipit.com and got it a few days ago, i'm going to install it if my friend isn't up to hanging out on thursday (she has surgery tomorrow). as i know it: Ubuntu: the OG, uses GNOME, most help coverage. good for beginners Kubuntu: uses KDE, runs better but less help coverage. good for advanced beginners Xubuntu: uses Xfce, good for old/slow systems, not much help out there. Edubuntu: for kids. might put it on my brothers pc when he gets older
As there all ubuntu help for all flavours is in abundance, Even found the debian forums helpful(no comments please i know ubuntu is built on deb).
