After some general thoughts / advice. I'm planning on a road trip to mid-spain later in the year, and neither I nor my friend want to put 2500 miles on our cars, so we're after something fun. It has to be:

    Less than £1500
    Hard Top
    Cool
    Cooler
    Awesome

As you can see we're being picky. Space isn't an issue and it'll only be insured for a few weeks before being garaged / sold.

So far we're considering a shark-nosed 6 series, or more likely a Porsche 924/944. We realise whatever we get won't be reliable but we're willing to work round that. Any other suggestions for vehicles to consider, other than "don't be daft"?

    cheers!

MX-5 I would have thought would be your best bet... not really a hard top though... :p

Few options here, but it entirely depends on your own tastes/needs. I'd be looking at:

    Mitsubishi FTO
    Mitsubishi GTO
    Subaru Impreza
    Mazda MX5
    MG ZR
    Honda Civic Type R Coupe
    BMW 323i
    Toyota MR2

Out of those, the FTO is in fact a V6, so you would have such a nice engine note for when you really open the throttle. I used to have one (in fact, I've owned two!) and they sound awesome.

Like I said though, it depends on taste and needs.

Hmmm, tipping towards Japanese cars. Will have a look into those, had in my head an almost-classic, but you may have a point, would almost certainly be more reliable. Hard top was mainly down for the fact we'll probably be going in November/December, and would like to not get pneumonia =D

    Cheers for the suggestions!

I'll +1 the BMW 323i, or similar diesel.

how about some flavour of golf gti.

edit thinking about that now a mk1or2 is probably way below budget and mk3and4 arent that desirable

Mk1 isn't going to be below budget for a decent one, they're pretty much a classic these days.
Mk2 you can still pick up for a fair price so yeah, I think a Golf would be a wicked idea!
Classics are always good, although I am a little biased.

I'm thinking of doing some kind of eurotrip in the mini once it's finished.

But if they are just gonna stick to the motorway then there's no point getting sommot fun, just woft down and woft back up in comfort.

He might want to drive while he's there? You don't need to go at speed to enjoy a car. Some of the best drives I've had have been off the main road, along a B-road where noone is about.

Erm, for £1,500? Even a R32 Skyline standard for a decent one would be more than that.

    Cheers for the suggestions guys...

As for big and comfort, aside from the price issue, I already own an Audi A4, and the friend I'm going down with drives a BMW, so it's not such an attraction.

Some of the Alfas are really cheap, was looking at those 13eightyfour, and they're tempting, good suggestion!

And yes, we fancy driving while we're down there. Wofting is not in my nature!

Bagman - an amazing selection, but slightly too costly I'm afraid...

I'd either go for an E30 3-series or an MX5. Personally I'd go for an MX5, preferably one with an LSD.

Either that or be a man and just put a few miles on your car. It's there to be enjoyed. :p

Krikkit - mx5 might have to be tried out... and my car gets 20k a year put on it, with servicing every 10k, and I'm not too keen on other people driving it either...

Bagman - ahhhh that makes sense! =D
