I'm looking for an ultraportable to take to classes and use when I'm not at home. Right now I have an Eee 1000 with 2GB of RAM and it just doesn't cut it. My preferences are:

    • Uses: Notes, internet, watching video (from flash drive/network)
    • Screen no bigger than 13", but preferably 11.6" as I want to put it in my bag
    • At least 5 hours of battery
    • Hopefully an i3/5/7 series processor
    • No disk drive necessary
    • Dedicated graphics aren't really necessary, as long as I can watch ripped 1080p films
    • About the $900 range

The storage amount doesn't matter as I plan on replacing it with an SSD. So far I'm leaning towards the Acer TimelineX 1830T but I've heard the build quality is poor on them. I've also looked at Dell and the HP dm1z but neither had everything I wanted; and the Sony Z series looks good but I don't have enough money for those. Any ideas?

    with SSD included.

It's an older model that will be replaced by this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157497&cm_re=2540p-_-34-157-497-_-Product

The main difference between the two are the processor.

Not quite sure about battery life though. I have a 2530p myself and I get about 2,5-3 hours on a 3 cell battery when doing light surfing with WLAN enabled. Those linked come with a 6 cell which will give you a bit more, but at the cost of a bigger battery (a small lump will protrude from the back of the computer)

The screen isn't the best out there, but at least it's the correct aspect ratio for office work. (16:10)

What you really want though is a Lenovo (x400 or x200), but those are a bit more expensive.

surely the price range and usage would allow for an ipad or android tablet, considering your just browsing the net, note taking and experiencing various media types.

At class i could have said the lesson is more important, so pad and paper is the cheapest option.

Asus U36: 'full speed' i5 CPU not ultra-low power, sub 1" thick, 5+hrs battery. Twas very nice in the quick hands on I got recently, but quite expensive though since no one else makes this.

Acre 3820 T/TG (G has discrete graphics for more $)
And it's below your budget, and apparently has superb cooling.

As a reference, I've got the 4820TG (14" screen, very similar specs), and it's excellent.

@Smilodon: Those look alright, the resolution is kind of low but that's livable.

@Burnout: I'm not a fan of tablets, I would rather just have an actual laptop.

@Bindi: I like it but I can't seem to find any from stores in the US.

@Pimonserry: I like the TG version, but it also isn't available here. What do you think about the build quality though? Because that seems to be the biggest complaint on reviews I've read.

Thanks for the help; I'm still not sure what I'll end up with though.

Maybe the U36 is too new :( they announced it so it should be coming soon.
