I'm potentially looking to get hold of an ultraportable style laptop. Think Vaio VGN-P11Z or Fujitsu LifeBook U820 style machine: something with a relatively small screen (5"-8") but with a keyboard and a clamshell chassis.

Tablets have sort of overtaken this space in the market, but I'm not really interested in a tablet: I've had an Advent Vega and a Nexus 7, but I want something with the flexibility of being able to install whatever OS I want. I know I'm not going to get a new machine - second hand is fine by me - and I know I'm not going to get super processing power. But I'm having a nightmare trying to find information about what's out there (or was out there).

Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations? There are plenty of Vaio machines out there, but they tend to be quite expensive.

EDIT: an x86 processor isn't an absolute requirement; ARM & Linux doesn't scare me.

    What's your budget?

Although its a bit bigger than your proposed size, consider a used Surface Pro (original model), with type cover.

Screen any smaller and you're going to run into usability problems.

Budget is the $64,000 question :). It really depends on what's out there.

I'm not really interested in something larger than 8" to be honest; I think a Surface Pro would be just that little bit too big (it isn't hugely smaller in terms of screen size than the ThinkPad x201 I already have). This is the thing; I want to go *really* small :).
