Is it generally safe to use the broadband connection in my university to download files from mirc? are there any risks?

If the ports aren't blocked, they must not mind too much, just don't d/l gigs of warez. Though the risk isn't from the uni brodband, but from IRC, just be generally cautious, use a virus scanner, specifically scan anything before you open it...

Ask you sysadmins if you can use IRC, you don't have to specifically mention d/ling files, but see if it is ok to use IRC. If some how the admin is a moron and dosen't know what IRC is, play it off like AIM.
