Well, results are on Thursday and according to most sources there is pretty much zippo available through clearing.. So who's hoping to go where and do what?
i never got the idea of clearing. its like hi er can i have a place at uni cause i wasnt good enough to get in at my 6 choices when i applied ? feel sorry for people though tough times with high cost and less places. to be honest it isnt worth going to uni unless your career/job requires it now as it doesnt almost garuantee you a job like it used to.
Good luck to you all, remember, it's not the end of the world, even if it looks bleak now. Uni is an experience all of its own, even forgetting career advancement it's worth doing imo.
Im gunning for UCL and doing a Masters in civil engineering. Living on Godge Street will be jokes of the upmost nature.
I've got my place at Durham (General Engineering - probably go into Electronic Engineering) secured since last year. I'm anxious to find out details about my accommodation because there's about a 50/50 chance that I'll have a shared room. Which sucks, to be honest.
While this is true, you pretty much need a degree to flip a burger at McDonalds nowadays. And it doesn't matter what your degree is in really - its a show of commitment to potential employers. Even if you flick though the 'crap job' listing at recruitment agencies, most will have "Graduate" in the title. Good luck everyone!
Unless you're going into a career which is dying out (Butcher, baker, candlestick maker) You'll need some form of HE qualifications, and even for those careers listed above you'll generally go on to an NVQ course of sorts. The phrase "a degree is your key" is now wrong and advice regarding "go in to something you enjoy" is also wrong. People with media degree's don't get jobs outside of the media (unless you're a call centre jockey). I had to give interview feedback to someone with a film studies degree on why they didn't get the place. Your degree taught you no commercial acumen and nothing business related. Why am I going to put you in to a commercial role?
I have to agree, as an Employer why would i want to hire someone fresh from Uni to fill a role they have no experience in? I'd rather go with the person with no degree but with lots of valuable work experience, in the long run its much better.
The biggest problem is that too many employers aren't prepared to help out graduates, either with work experience or a lucky break. It leaves people in a miserable position.
You mean in the short term its better of course, as in the short term the person with no degree would certainly be better, but the guy with a degree would inevitably catch up eventually. The thing people forget most about people with degrees is that they bring new ideas to the table - learn through other people and you do it how they do it and no know more as you are on the job to get a job done, whereas in uni you are generally encouraged to widen your view of things. University is useful, and as said, its just as much about the showing a commitment to a subject as anything else. Broaden your horizons, meet people in different disciplines, join societies of things you are interested in etc Good luck to those of you getting results this week, especially those of you who have been picked on by the system and are required to get an A*. From a new teachers POV, a physicist and someone who still has their alevel papers - its not getting easier, the exams are the same, the teaching and learning is better - so you have the hardest job of anybody trying to get into uni. Good luck!
go self employed, both at uni and when finished, extra cash always comes in handy! esspically when setting up a wireless network for someone is an easy £20 + cup of tea
Not as easy as it sounds. And if you rely on it to pay your way through uni and work slows off at some point.... well lets not mince words, you're f**ked. All I can do is wish you all luck with both your results but more importantly with getting a place at uni. I know what it's like because I've been there myself and wouldn't like to be going through it again.
Did an access course so known I'd met the requirements since June. Studying chemistry at QMUL. Slightly in two minds as to if I should have picked Loughborough but as my friend said "One of the greatest cities in the world or a field between Leicester and Nottingham". Good point I thought. Good luck all waiting for results.
I'm applying for Chemistry at Birmingham (1st choice) and Reading (2nd choice).. I need BBB for Birmingham Anyone headed to either of those?
I've just done my ASs (is pluralising AS into ass correct grammar? I don't know, ass is pretty fitting anyway), not much to say really except I hope they're good. They didn't ask what a JCR was on any of my exams so I should be OK. Dunno the exact choices I'm going to make but my primary Choice is Maths at Christs College Cambridge.
Cool, cool. Don't know those, really. I was in Ramsay last year, although I virtually lived at Ifor for the second half of the year. Be sure to pop into Icco's when you're on Goodge Street. Good, cheap pizza.
