We were all amazed when the 1GHz Athlon from AMD came out in May 2000. The race to 1GHz was heated up furiously as AMD and Intel anguished over when would be the right time to pull their triggers. Hearts of the new-tech persuaders were in overdrive with the release of 1GHz processor from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Two years later, AMD has definitely become the greatest competitor in the field of central processing units as they achieved 3.9 billion USD in the year of 2001. In the February 2001 edition of the Maximum PC magazine, the preview crew made a prediction: in the first half of year 2002, AMD's own interpretation of 64-bit computing would take form in Sledge Hammer (for 4- and 8-way server) and Claw Hammer (for workstations). Here at Hardware Extreme, we will be giving you a kick-ass sneak preview of the 8th-generation processor that AMD is currently developing.

Performance. 244 is better than the 242 is better than the 240. The middle for signifies the number of processors it can be used with : eg 220 is a dual system, 280 is an 8-way system. 284 is a better 8-way system.

Sorry, that is incorrect as far as the middle number.
The first number will set what type of processor it is.
there will be a 14x series, 24x series, and 84x series.
The 14x will only work by themselves.
the 24x series will only work with another processor.
(Or as a single, when used on a dual board)
the 84x will work with four or more processors.

The middle number (4) actualy is totaly meaningless.
