Hi, I'm currently running a rather ancient Asus P6T Deluxe with an Intel Xeon 5650 and 12 gig of triple data DDR2 at 1066mhz, while it still manages to run most games ok at 1080p (using a XFX 280x which is going asap) I was wondering what would be a decent upgrade path to take, I am aware that I am losing out on quite a few newer features sticking with this motherboard, but is it worth the expense of upgrading the mobo, cpu and memory or will just a new GPU do the job?. I mainly use it for gaming on.

Are you absolutely sure you're running an LGA775 board with an LGA1366 CPU?

My guess is the board is a little newer than the P5K. But to be honest you're not really missing out on much. If your board predates SATA3 then I'd just get a slightly newer second hand board for the kit you have.

The next logical upgrade path is the 5820k. I assume you are using a P6T.

Personally I would buy something like a 390 and see how you get on with that before jumping to a new board/ram/CPU though.

    Is the 5650 overclocked?

Yeah my bad my mobo is indeed the P6T Deluxe, don't know why I put P5K that was my even older board, I've got the x5650 running stable at 4 gig with a 20x multiplier. I have got a Sata 3 plug in card that i use for the Hdds

Yeah you'd have to shove me really hard to get me to change that. I really can't see how that CPU could possibly struggle with anything really. At 4ghz even if only four cores are used by a game that's still more than enough power and if the game calls for more cores they're there.

I would get a new GPU. It's not like you can't use it in another board etc.

so now i know i don't need to upgrade my mobo, cpu and memory anytime soon, i'm looking at maybe a 1440p monitor and getting a GTX 970 or is it worth putting the extra for a GTX 980?
