    Im using an Asus A7V133-C and 384 MB Crucial SDRAM at the moment (running at 140mhz). I find my system responsive, but would I see any difference (if so, would it be considerable?) if I upgraded to:

    Asus A7N8X
    2x 256MB PC3200 DDR RAM (Run it dual channel)

    (of course I couldnt run it at PC3200, but its handy for overclocking and future compatibility)

    Thanks... :D

    Not really....

    You honestly don't have anything better to spend the money on? What monitor are you using for example? Or maybe spend it on something other than computers?

    As isaac said there's probably more worthwhile upgrades unless your mobo + ram are the weakest points in your system - in that case you should do it imo.

    Argh....

    NO. I hate this whole thing....

    WHAT, exactly, is it that an AthlonXP running at 1610MHz is so incapable of that it requires an upgrade? Software has NOT moved on considerably since that would have been regarded as a top spec system (only a year ago). Hardware is moving WAY faster than software, and a LOT of people have drastically overspecced systems.

    Spend that £200 or so on buying some good books, or some tickets to the opera or theatre, or some really nice restaurant meals, or ANYTHING! See that there is life outside of computers!

    As you can see from my sig, I have a very similarly specced system(KT7A being Abit's competitor to the A7V133, a Tbird at 1633 being of a similar level of power to the AthlonXP at similar speeds, etc, etc, etc). And yet I feel absolutely no compunction to upgrade it, because it is certainly far from slow. I'm absolutely sure that you can find SOMETHING else to spend money on....

    yeah god dammit, wait until your computer is horrendously out of date, just runs new stuff but hardly very well, THEN UPGRADE, and you will feel the benefit much more!!!!!

    take me for example, I have had a ****ty Intel MOBO and a celeron 400mhz for the past 3 years almost (25th december is our 3rd anniversary :p) and im gonna upgrade to 256DDR (From 256mb SD @ 66mhz), which is more like DDDR because im gonna get an nForce2 abit mobo, and a athlonxp 2100+. I will feel the benefit much more than if i went from a 1700+ to a 2000+ to a 2600+ etc!!!!

    However, if you really must spend it on your computer, buy a big ass SCSI HDD :D:D now, THAT! Will speed up your system! :D

    What I meant was if he has decided he wants to upgrade SOMETHING, then it should be whatever the weakest point in his system is. I'm only running an xp1600 and a few months ago I was on a Duron 800 so I'm no stranger to yesterday's technology.

    If you're going to upgrade your machine at all, I wouldn't spend it on a new mobo and CPU (your current setup is quite high-spec). Look at my sig - What I'm running isn't exactly top of the line but it's fast enough.

    (Christmas prezzy comes closer...£1500 to build an entire P4 rig with a granite bay board....:D)

    Think about a new monitor perhaps?

    ok....one I do have a personal life so I dont need to spend it on 'opera tickets'. :D

    I put aside some money a while ago and thought it would be good to upgrade my system with. The only reason I am saying this is because I just got UT2003 and at times it is slow. When I am in UT2003 I notice lagging on large maps. Im running it at 1024x768 at high quality, I assumed that a GeForce 4 ti4200 clocked to 4400 could handle this WITHOUT lag.

    I was thinking a better chipset would give me more bandwidth (especially with DDR) and UT2003 would run better.

    Monitor is fine, have a 19" CTX.....
    Gatecrasher = v good
    Guitars = v good
    :D

    Like Isaac says, an upgrade probably isn't worth it. I'm the worst person in the world for going 'hmm that motherboards good' or 'nice new video card' and at times I've spent money that I don't have a lot of on things I didn't 'need' for the computer, or ones that made an extremely small or no difference (see that Ti4600 in my sig...could I 'feel' the difference from the Ti200 that went before it...hell no! Yet that upgrade still cost me £170!)

    Buy a new monitor (as these are usually the weakest part of most ppls system, as they regard a 17' for £120 to be fine, and don't realise what they're missing from a better screen. You look at it all day long, so it pays to have a good one). My next buy will by a new monitor (Sony F-520 if I get a well paying job, or an A-420 or G-420 if I get a less well paying job!).

    Or....

    Save up and buy yourself the nicest and best home cinema or hi fi that you can :D yes it costs, but my is it worth it if you listen to a lot of music. Again my next 'big' buy of anything will be a tuner for my current setup, a new CD player, or some B&W speakers of some sort (/me prays to gods for £599.99 for some 603 S2s).

    My rule, that I struggle to keep (but I have yet to break in a big way) is upgrade only when you play a game and it runs like an absolute dog at 1024x768, whatever the settings, and you find applications are so slow as to be unusable. For me, no more major upgrades than a new mobo + memory + cpu every two years. This has left me money to spend on other stuff thats just as enjoyable as any computer!

    My 2p :)
