I presume that you mean the ATI 6950 ;) The 9650 is rather old

Looks like a fine plan. For purely gaming, your system is fine and the bottleneck will be the GPU in just about all instances. Investing the majority of budget there will make the most sense. The other bits are just nice to have, although a good, branded PSU is a must if you don't have one (i.e. if you have a cheapo PSU right now).

Do you have a nice monitor?

1920x1080 is a really nice resolution for gaming. I have the Samsung P2450 monitor, full HD with VGA/DVI/HDMI, they can be had for around £200.

possibly consider win 7 ultimate x64?

I'd go the monitor. SSDs are very nice, but there's nothing like a nice screen and solid GPU for gaming ...

You have a great CPU & board. A Samsung F3 1Tb is only around £40 @ Scan and an Antec TruePower New 650w Modular is usually on special there at least twice a week for £60.

A better GPU and monitor are good suggestions.

unles you need to join a domain and run multiple languages together ultimate is a waste.
home premium is good enough for 90% of people and if you need to join a domain you buy pro or you intend to use more than 16GB of RAM anytime soon

what PSU do you currently have ?

personally id drop the cash for a new HDD and PSU but and spread that between an SSD and a better GPU or just a better SSD.

use the 2x500GB drives as storage instead of buying a 1TB for storage !

dont replace drives unless their faulty chances of it failing shoudnt be any different than new drives to be honest as they are rated for millions of hours.

SSD will make you OS boot very quickly and games will load extremely fast.

Seasonic 620w S12II-620 Bronze is on special on Scan's Today Only page right now for £59.99.

Or go modular with the 520W Seasonic M12II-520 Modular for the same price or the non-modular version for £53.99.

http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx - scroll down to Seasonic Power Supplies section.

What is the minimum PSU rating for a 6950?

If you want a 650w modular PSU, the Antec Truepower is a good choice. Scan sometimes have it on special offer for about sixty quid
