The Crucial M4 is probably the most popular midrange choice here. You'll see a nice little speed bump at a reasonable price if you go with that one.

(Once again - though now inc the 830 as it's come down to a more sensible level), for a 120/128GB OS/Apps/etc SSD with a reasonable cycle usage, it runs -

    1. Toogle Nand SF - ie the V3 max iops @ £144 (atm on Amazon - it has been as low as £135 on there over the last couple of weeks - seemingly changing price every couple of days)

    2. The Corsair Performance Pro - ~£145-55

    3. The Samsung 830 - ~£140-50

    4. Either the M4 or the sync nand SFs (ie the Corsair Force GT - as it's cheaper than the V3) - ~£123 // ~£120.

(they're - the M4 & the sync nand SFs - much of a muchness with overall speeds, but the latter has advantages with longevity & non-trim environments)

So, whilst you 'might' find things like the CPC magazine erroneously suggesting that you'd *have* to pay £196 to get a top end 120GB toggle nand SF (the Patriot Pyro Wildfire in their recent review)...

...the difference between "mid range" & "top end" on the 120/128GB consumer SSDs is about £20.

That's not to say that you can't pay more for other reasons -

well something like the intel 510 is ~£175 - the drive being slower than both the PP & the M4 whilst using the same controller (although using higher rated nand than the M4), but you're paying for the brand rep...

    - but there is no real life advantage to, for example, choosing an OCZ toggle nand SF over a Patriot toggle nand SF or a Mushkin toggle nand SF or...

Well, whilst there may be very small trade offs in speed as the manufacturers 'can' tweak the base SF f/w (though this tends to be no more than you'd see with testing variance), these make no real difference & are not consistent across base f/w revisions - it's just about choosing on price & buying from a brand that you're happy with.
