    Hi guys,

Looking for some advice on a gfx card upgrade from what i currently have, EVGA 8800 GTX.

This is what it will be going into, these components will be upgraded shortly:

    AMD Phenom x4 9500
    Asus Crosshair AM2+
    4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC2- 8500C5 1066MHz
    EVGA 8800 GTX

    Thanks

depending on your budget & power supply, id look at nvidia gt 460 768 mb or 1 gb or ati 5770 to 5850.

I just upgrade from the 8800GTX (it was WC and had a slight OC) to a 460 1GB card, check the thread here

Is that Phenom overclocked? 2.2GHz by the looks of it ... which is a bit slow these days and could be a bottleneck without overclocking.

The best upgrade depends on your screen resolution, budget, and what you intend to do later (e.g. upgrade platform in 9 months ...).

At this exact moment in time I would suggest the 1GB GTX460 or 5850 if you can afford those cards. I don't think that the 5770 is enough of a step to justify the outlay. If you can answer the above questions then I'm sure we can help more.

The GTX460 and above seems to be the only option. But it would be akin to upgrading to a GTX280 of yesteryear. Not that much of a gain honestly.

The 460 or a 5850 would be a massive benefit, unless there is a CPU limitation ... which there is to a degree unless some solid overclocking is happening. The 5770, not so much.

Hmm I stand corrected, perhaps I just looked at the wrong benchmarks. But the GTX460 does have a 100% lead over the 8800GTX.

It might be the association with the GTX280 that had me going there, the GTX460 is actually faster than it!

Yeah, no worries. The 280 is still a brilliant card ... hard choices on upgrades from that one.

The GTX460 is indeed a worthy upgrade, perhaps moreso than the HD5850, since you can overclock it to insane levels.

Forgot to add, current gaming res is 1920x1080, & buget for the new card will be around the £300 mark

I've always thought the phenom was a bottleneck after all it was the 1st phenom that was released, was great at the time I built the rig tho :D

I just upgraded from 8800GT to the MSI 460 1gb. Big difference. I was thinking about a full new build until I tried this card, now I might get by for another 2-3 years. However, my current system is Intel Q6600 on Abit IP35 pro w/8gb CPU OC'd to 3.2

On a side note, my big prob with upgrade was PSU... I had an OCZ 600 watt , this did not supply sufficient amps. I ended up steal... swapping mine for my gf's E-Jet PSU. Weird but it works, and I was also able to get stable CPU OC. Good luck with decision.
