I've been posting about upgrading my mum's pc recently and have finally got the parts and am at hers now. having to post on mobile phone.

took out old CPU and RAM, put better spec (but compatible) stuff in. pc won't boot.

    mobo is an Intel D845GRG

when power connected a small green light on mobo comes on and the CPU fan twitches but when I press the boot button nothing happens.

    What now?

Will be so grateful if someone can advise.

    thanks

Have you tried removing the parts you added and see if it boots?

I would suggest first taking out the new RAM.

Did you update the bios beforehand? Sometimes that's necessary if the parts are of a newer generation.

Also make sure there is no standoff or anything shorting the board.

Yep, already put old parts back in - no difference.

when you press the power button, can you see any fans spinning up briefly?

Can you post the specs of the machine and the old/new parts?

when I switch the psu switch on the small green light on the mobo comes on and the pcu fan twitched, but when I then press the power button at the front of the case nothing happens, no fans, no sign of anything other than the little green light which stays on while the power is connected.

Pull every single conection off and make sure they are all plugged in properly. Have you done something silly like forgotten to plug the CPU in or something, It's easily done.

Looks like your ram maybe the issue, its looks to be the wrong stuff if you go off intels own guidelines..even checked another site and it lists the same 200mhz - 266mhz for this board and not 400mhz......

"Supported RAM speeds: 200 MHz - 266 MHz"

    http://www.epinions.com/specs/pr-Intel_D845GRG_boxd845grg_Motherboard

    Even intels website state

The Intel® Desktop Board D845GRG provides the following memory features:

    * Two DIMM sockets supporting 2.5 V (only) 184-pin 200/266 MHz Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
    * Unbuffered non-ECC DIMMs only
    * Maximum total system memory: 2 GB; minimum total system memory: 64 MB
    * Serial Presence Detect (SPD) DIMMs only
    * Suspend to RAM

Done this about 7 times already!

...However, pulled the CMOS battery out as well as everything else and whatever has been done to it I now don't care because it is working!!!

I'm in Windows, it's recognising the 2gb RAM and it's recognising the 2.8ghz CPU...

... and the little blighter is zipping along:clap::D:rock:

Thanks to everyone who has posted on this thread. Not sure what helped and what didn't, but in the midst of an extremely frustrating Sunday afternoon and evening it was really great to at least get some people taking an interest  Thanks all :thumb:

I made sure and did my research on this before buying - the motherboard can only utilise something like 200mhz, but that doesn't mean the RAM sticks can't potentially be faster than that, we just won't see the benefit of it on this mobo.

Problem not fully resolved - odd power-up problem

Turns out I haven't actually fixed the problem.

Every time the pc shuts down it won't boot via the normal button. It looks like I've got to remove the CMOS battery every time I want to start it up i.e. remove the battery, wait a bit, put the battery back n and use the psu power switch to turn the machine on. As soon as psu switch is on the pc starts boot sequence.

    Any ideas what's doing this?

Have you tried just shorting the two pins that the case power button is connected to? If that works the case switch is knackered.

I have tried shorting the two pins.

Either the screwdriver I used is not conductive or that is not the cause of the problem.

Lol is it a plastic screwdriver? How old is the mobo? Your cmos battery may be buggered. Try another battery.

Yeah doesn't sound good for the battery. Try another, if it doesn't continue with the issues, the battery is at fault.

I dunno how old the mobo is - maybe 9 years.

It's too much of a coincidence for the battery to start playing up, or the switch for that matter, at the time I changed the parts. Unless I damaged something along the way...

I'll try a different battery, but I don't reckon it will change anything.
