I am going nuts trying to fix my sister's computer, as she needs it for work.

Here is the problem. When I run a virus scan using bit defender, the system will reset at the same point every time. This is during the registry scanning portion of the process. It BSODs to a "pagefile fault in nonpaged area" error.

The exact same things happens when I run Registry Mechanic, or when I open regedit and search for "magnet", which is the last thing Bit defender shows just a split sec before it resets.

I have checked the ram and it is NOT the problem, it is a software issue.

This all seemed to begin with the original problem I was trying to fix... a virus that removed the run command from the start menu, disabled the taskmanager, removed msconfig, and caused a huge amount of popups to appear. I have fixed all of thos probs (put run back, got task manager access back, replaced msconfig etc), but now I can't do proper registry scans to keep it running properly.

I would like to be able to fix this as opposed to formatting, as she doesn't have a lot of time, and she has a lot of stuff to re-install if I do.

    Need help please! :wallbash:

    Thanks a bunch!

If you go start menu - run and type 'sfc /scannow' that will run the windows built in program to fix the registry.

Also, somewhere on the McAfee website, you can find a a program called 'Stinger'. This is like their free virus scanner (it's hard to find though). McAfee is probably the best virus scanner to use as well.

If these fail, then boot the PC up in start mode, by pressing F8 when windows is loading (I keep pressing it constantly after it has posted), then run the programs again.

    Good luck mate

doh forgot about sfc /scannow... I'll try that out.

I have however done all the same scans in safemode, and had the same problem.

Sfc did not help. I tried a windows repair, but I got a lot of file errors during the process and now windows runs sloooow... what a disaster.
