Hi all I'm building a new pc with an Asus Maximus Hero VII and Corsair AX860i. I tested the PSU with nothing connected (it has a self test button) and it passed with a green light. I then built the rest of my machine but without the graphics and sound cards and it booted into the bios. When you switch the power on on the PSU, the motherboard lights up. I switched the machine off, installed the sound and graphics cards. I then switched power back on at the mains, then the psu. But this time no lights on the motherboard. I tried the self test on the PSU, but this time it failed. I disconnected everything except for the CPU and ATX power cables, and removed the sound and gfx cards. The test failed again. I think something is either shorting out or has fried. I certainly haven't heard anything go bang, nor have I smelt any burning silicon. The are no obvious visible defects or anything that could be causing a short. Can anyone help diagnose what's gone wrong? I'm getting a little stressed after all the money I've spent My rig is: Asus Maximus VII Hero i7 4790K Corsair 16GB Vengeance 2400 Corsair AX860i Corsair 750D Samsung 1TB EVO SSD Seagate Barracuda 3TB EVGA 780Ti Creative Soundblaster Z
Have you tried removing the sound card and GPU and testing again? if that passes ok then install the sound card test again then the GPU, It could still be the PSU at fault just one or both the sound card/ GPU tips it over the edge.
This says that you have to have all cables disconnected when doing the self test http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=122511 Try that?
Many PSU's have an overload cutout that resets after a short time but if you still have no power then start at the beginning and check the fuse in the plug if you've not done so, which may have blown if something has shorted out.
Thank you so much for the quick responses.... and now I must hang my head in shame.... The ATX connector on the motherboard was not fully connected. I can't have pushed it in far enough for the clip to hold it in place. I'm a moderately experienced builder having built all my own pc's and a couple for friends and family since the late '90s. But I just made the most basic of errors - check everything is properly connected. I'm now going to install Windows and see how it flies I'm so sorry guys, and thanks again for the quick responses.
Relieved is an understatement, though I did have small panic when I pushed the lose pins in - the power was off at the mains and on the PSU, but the motherboard still lit up for about 10 seconds. Just goes to show how long the juice can stay in the PSU... On the plus side, not only can the new rig run 3x Eve Online clients at max settings easily, the temps on the CPU and GPU are in the low 40's and mid-50's respectively. Time to update my sig
