I opened a file (from a flash key) on a laptop, and then edited it. I pulled the key out and put my laptop to sleep. After awhile, I put the key back in, and then tried to save the file. It said it couldn't read or something. So I tried to save it as another file name. Same problem (it thought I was trying to replace a read-only file). The edits weren't a big deal, so I closed the file. To my dismay, the file disappeared. Any way to get it back? HELP! The laptop was running Vista Basic. Thanks
Someone else might come up with a better idea, but you could use a file recovery tool like PCI File Recovery. (Freeware) If you're saying that you had the file on a pen drive and now it's not there, then it's actually easier to scan and recover from that than a full hard drive as it's a lot smaller. The only caveat is that the recovery tool may not like UAC being on. I recovered some files from a student laptop some weeks ago and had to turn UAC off before the software would see anything. It worked but the laptop complained a lot on startup and insisted on scanning itself after that until I put UAC back on, so be warned, (or use an XP machine.)
So the file appears to be lost from the pendrive itself? If it is... try something like Pendrive Data Recovery Software You won't actually be able to recover the file with the trial version, obviously... but it'll at least show you if it's still there? There are many other similar programs available of course, but I don't know of any FREE ones?
