Right, so I've got a Creative Zen 256mb memory stick MP3 player. It's just one of those thumb key things where you just drag and drop files onto it. Basic but it does the job just fine. Anyway, I have been having a few problems with my Apple and this MP3 player. Basically I could never free up any free space on the MP3 player. Even when I deleted all the MP3s, I would not get any free space on the player, to copy more music on. It took a few days ( :wallbash: ) to realise that this was because the files were being "trashed" and were not actually deleted from the player. So obviously, emptying the trash allowed me to copy music on, but this is annoying for two reasons:
    1) I have to remember to empty the trash
    2) I lose everything that is in the trash, including any documents etc from the main hard drive. I don't really like emptying the trash for the hard drive in case I've deleted something by mistake.

Anyone know what I have to do to fix this? Or even better, anyone know of any hack to use this MP3 player with iTunes or the like?

    Ta :)

Aren't the trashed files stored in a folder in the root of the drive called '.trashes'?

You could write an apple script to delete everything in that folder every time you unmount it.

Or, when you want to delete them, use the shortcut key for 'Delete without sending to trash'. But, unfortunatly, I've forgotten what it is.

open up a terminal, cd to the device (should be listed under /Volumes), then do an rm -r *

    done.

Yes, they are, but I can't see that folder withing Mac OSX, only from in Windows. I guess I need the Mac equivalent of "show system files"?
Sounds good although not particularly helpful as I would have to delete, unmount, remount, copy files. Seems a bit long-winded...
A bit of googling has not turned up anything along those lines, although apparently I can get a 3rd party "shredder" program which would do what I want. Just drag to that rather than to the trash. But that seems like a silly solution to what should be a simple problem :sigh:

You COULD use Cmd + Drag and move them to another location, then they wouldn't be in the trash, and they wouldnt be on the flash drive/mp3 player anymore.

Opening the terminal is a bit lon-winded. Thats like opening up the terminal to eject the optical drive..

Yeah. I think "cutting" the files from the usb-thingy and pasting them somewhere on your harddrive (to be deleted later) is the best/easiest way to go.

But you shouldn't have documents in your trash that you might need later. I always double check before I delete and after that I immediatly empty the trash. I like my bin clean and empty! lol.

    good luck

PS: Is there no way to get it recognised in iTunes??? .. like a iPod Shuffle? That would make your life alot easier.. I reckon you need iTunes anyway to copy music to it (to locate your music).
