    Hi all.
I've got one of those battery powered staplers you can find in Woolworths and today I decided to try modding it by connecting it by USB instead of using the batteries.

It was pretty darn easy wire to wire and worked fine when I plugged it in but now I want more!

I'm only a n00b when it comes to electronics but what else could I do to make it cooler?

Why, make it usb CONTROLLED, of course ;)
A button to click which results in a stapling :p

ok so maybe not a noob project ;)

a vfd with staples left would be functional :)
you could also adapt it to accept nailgun feeds and use it as a weapon :D

That does sound like a good idea but I do wonder how the hell to do it.

    Here's the video I put on Youtube :- http://youtube.com/watch?v=hZXAMS6jVE0

:hehe: Utterly pointless, gratuitous geeky use of technology... cool. :D

I second karolis' idea. A display with staples left.

I was going to say that would be pretty hard but actually you'd just need something to count the amount of times the motor gets used and an LCD.

Currently "0" staples left... need to go buy some!

    Edit: Or a sensor!

Heh, thats pretty funny. Thinkgeek actually has a combination Tape dispenser/USB hub that i was looking at for my office at work. It's a nice way to save desk space and keep the USB hub from being to obtrusive.

Just a question, how powerful is that stapler? On youtube it seemed really weak. so weak in fact i doubted it could pierce even 2-3 sheets of paper :D
In college we've got a pneumatic stapler. that beast can go through 110-130 sheets (maybe more) with those long staples :D

Well. Originally it was powered by 6v of alkaline batteries. However USB can only provide 5v so far as I know.
I reckon it probably could do 10 sheets but i can't be sure.

Get rid of the usb idea. Power it via 12volt molex, so you have double the power and either complete electrical failure, or an awesome high powered killing machine.

I am not sure about this, but powering it using 2 usb slots, that wouldn't equate to 10 volts would it, it would just give you more amps right? So that wouldn't help.

Also I couldn't help seeing this related video on youtube

What a complete mentalist/genius that guy is.

NO, heres what you do, Although the bb gun idea is a good idea.
But you should make it a motion sensor, so every time you sit down it goes *Thunk* And you fall out of your chair, and it goes *thunk* Again

Pfft, it won't really be geekalicious until it's a water-cooled, windowed, keyboard-controlled usb stapler. ;P

Give it AI and call it Stapler.
It would be kind of like Bender, but for stapling.

Also, put caterpillar tracks on it so it can drive around :p

Lol. I have a new addition to the collection. It is a AAA (But Now Modded To USB :D lol) Battery Radio/ MP3 Speaker from ASDA. I broke the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable on it the otherday so I can't connect it to my PC however it does work as a radio.

Innocent question, but what is the benefit of a electric stapler? I see none unless you've got crippling arthritis or something.
