Apple USB WiFi for OSX

    Had a couple of doubters on msn so to prove I'm not a n00b that thinks I can slap any old card in the AP slot:

    Got my ibook today, plugged the card in and it worked no problems no need to do anything switched on and I had wifi, old airport drivers too!

    It's also discontinued like the airport, ebay is where I got mine and I was damn lucky to find one and get it at the price.

    And now you dont even have an iBook to use it with :( Well at least not untill they repair it.

    (The logic board fried!)

    apparently any wifi card with a broadcom chipset will be detected as an airport card and work fine...

    Not all will work in the airport card slot, and in the ibook without modification the sony card is the only one that will physically fit.

    Is the airport slot just a USB interface with a different socket or does it use a completely different bus?

    Afaik its PCMCIA, but only airport cards are allowed to use it. My PowerMac has the same port, it looks like a PCMCIA card would fit, but I could be wrong.
