Simple question: Is it possible? I am currently on Cable Broadband, and am wondering whether I can use my unused ADSL Router as a switch (to allow two computers to use one long (existing) network cable to connect to the Cable Router). Thanks in advance...
i think cable broadband is like ethernet, so you must get a gateway of some sort. so a DSL router is needed. ADSL router can only be used if you don't need a gateway, which is very unlikely.
Possibly, depends on what particular hardware you're refering to. Is your Cable connection a simple modem, or router? How many LAN ports? What model is the ADSL Router? How many LAN ports? If it's a Cable Modem/Router/Switch and an ADSL Modem/Router/Switch, then It's possible you can turn off the the ADSL DHCP function, give it a static IP on the Cable Router and connect the 2 via Ethernet, giving you an extra 3 LAN ports. But without some specific details, very hard to advise.
I'm aiming for something like Cable modem --- 4 port router --- cable --- old router === two PCs (where '=' is two cables) I think this is what I am expecting, will try it out later.
I thought that's what you meant. Yes, it should be fine, as long as both are routers. What are the make and model numbers of the routers you are using??
yeah, i was thinking you won't have the 4 port router there. then the old router will act like a switch, and the 4 port router will provide all the services such as DHCP
