Prob been asked to death but i :search: and came up with only one forum which is similar but not relevent!

Google came back with not a lot either.

Basicly i have a dud 4g 40gig ipod with a dud drive and a broken screen ( not much use most people will say). When i bought it i also bought an ALPINE kit to allow my cars head unit to fully control the ipod (without the need to see on screen) which is where i want to mount the ipod semi-perminantly now.

The screen is therefore not an issue, the hard disk is however. I dont want to replace it with a 1.8" drive as it will most likely die in a car anyway, i want to connect a cheepo 40gig standard 3.5" ide drive, and ideally run fully off the ipod (ie powered).

Can someone point me in the right direction to get a board for this or even a pinout where i can create a connector from the ipods 50pin to the ide?

    1. fantastic idea
    2. it has been done before, but I don't have any links for you.
    3. in regards to hard drive selection - the smaller a hard drive, the less it is likely to be damaged by bumps. I realize that it may be more expensive, but you may want to consider a laptop drive instead.

You could reverse-engineer one of these. :) Could be tricky though - the connector for the 1.8" drive is a bit specific.

[edit]On another note, you can get hardened laptop drives for not a massive premium over a standard one.

cant you just get a small usb caddy, place disk in that, and then plug it into your USB port on the alpine head unit? (that is of course, if it has one)?

I'm just thinking, the ipod itself won't be able to provide enough power to a standard 3.5" HDD.
Also, I'm just wondering how you plan to update the songs on it?
Might prove to be a real PITA.

but you'll probably have to use a DC-DC adaptor from you car to power the hard drive

edit: strangely enough that was the second result on google for "ipod ide". people should really learn to search better

Nope- the headunit was the pre usb version, it is a special unit to connect only to Ipods.
