i just came across a magnetic card reader (like the ones used to scan credit cards etc.) it uses the ps/2 port. i was wondering how i could use it to log into my linux box? i think that would kick ass.

Could you post the information you found. I'm sure it would be interesting to other readers of the forum. Myself included.

    Thanks,

*swipes* *swipes again*. password entered and confirmed.

ooh, root wants a login *swipes* there we go. Now, if the strip is to go, you're fooked.

All the magnetic card readers I've used just sent keystockes to the ps/2 port so you'd be fine using one for a password provided you knew what the password was if you ever damaged or lost the card

I just use a fingerprint reader, easier I think as you don't need to carry anything to use the computer. It's only when you lose your fingers your fooked, but then again I wouldn't be able to type :p

A card reader is still pretty cool though, perhaps some pics?

IIRC the cut/burn part isn't that bad, because it doesn't notice it, but the rest might screw you over.

But then again, what if you have amnesia and you forget all your passwords? There's nothing that is a 100% secure, so there's allways a what-if possible. These are just more secure ways of protecting your digital stuff

I can use any of my 8 fingers and 2 thumbs to log in, if I manage to destroy all my fingers and thumbs I can type my password in, but then without fingers I can't :worried:
