Hi all, I have a Telewest cable connection and want to share it. I know that the simplest way is just to get a router and bingo, all done. But that's not very interesting though.... So, I thought that maybe I could use a spare PC running a linux distro, or maybe get a cheap Sun from eBay and use that instead. Anybody currently doing this? Another reason is that I've heard that with something like FreeBSD I can use bandwidth shaping and limit the other PC's download/uploads speeds. Not entirly needed, but something else to play with! So, anybody offer any advice? Anything greatly appreciated. Will I just need a simple hub/switch to connect all boxes to? And would the Linux box need just one NIC or two? Thanks again.
Maybe you should read the sticky links here half way down I have listed a few. Personally I have used smoothwall and ipcop and a quick look at mandrake multi firewall, all worked well but I settled on ipcop. It did a good job with add ons like ipban which blocked ips and ports etc. I am now on a standalone router but I might give esmith ago as it can act as an ftp and file server etc as well.
From looking at the IPcop site, is it just a firewall? I need something that will act as a DHCP server and also make sure that the net connection can only see one MAC address. I am being dumb here....maybe I should read a bit more on the sticky thread you posted!!!! EDIT: D'oh.......will keep reading!
IPCOP is a firewall/router it will act as a dhcp server on your lan if you wish, also it will keep time by ntp, it will also update clients from dynamic dns such no-ip etc. But if you want a file server/ftp etc as well as a firewall/router try esmith as I am soon going to do.
