I love working on the things. My mother has an Oreck too (newer model than mine with the headlights on) and she can't do without it. She has chronic arthritis and actually dropped a Dyson down the stairs. You don't even want to imagine the noise that makes. And it broke, badly. So now I took her Oreck upstairs for her (constantly sitting on the landing ready for action) and she got one of those cordless things for downstairs. Air ram is it? something like that. Nowhere near as powerful as the Oreck but does the job reasonably well
Saw one of their salesmen down my road the other day - he didn't stop long st my house when he knocked the door and the dog barked at him lol
We have a Vax Mach Air (U91-MA-B) which I far prefer to the Dyson that I'm planning to take to the skip on Saturday. It picks up brilliantly, does a great job on all the wood shavings and hay that the guinea pigs leave on the carpet, and as the motorised brush bar is driven from a separate motor it has the intelligence to sense something stalling it and switch off so you can run over a sock without breaking the belt. Really easy to service too. Downsides, it's got a small bin so has to be emptied more often, and the cord is a little shorter than I'd like. In addition to this the hose is short and clipped in which can be a scunner to use, but it doesn't seem to be an issue. Unfortunately I've not used enough vacuum cleaners to have a well rounded opinion on them, but I've been very impressed with this one. Miele anyone?
We have a Dyson DC50 and its the worst hoover going, constanly loses suction and is rubbish at getting close to edges.
My parents still have a DC01 and DC02 in working order. Some of the flaps are held on with duct tape though. Mostly they use a DC07 upstairs and the 01 downstairs since they're so darn heavy. The 07 is a workhorse though, the suction is still pretty fantastic.
DC40 Here, Had an old original dyson which lasted about 14 years so had to get a new one when I shacked up with the Mrs. Probably will outlast me.
Miele make some great stuff - it is well made, and it performs very well. The only downside is the small bags (2 liters IIRC) and the fact that replacements are so darned expensive - and you only get 5 bags for like £8.00. I get at least 10 bags for Henry for that money and they last ages. I didn't need to change the first bag in our Henry for around 9 months, now we either aren't very messy or we back then didn't hoover enough. Now that we have Harvey (Dog) we are hoovering alot more than before so we have gotten through 2 bags in the last 3 months.
We have a vacuum cleaner thread now. Love it. We've got laminate flooring downstairs, so we've got one of those dry floor mop things and one of these: Hoover Capsule cordless. Bloody good piece of kit, I have to be fair. Beats the crap out of the upright we have when used on laminate floor, but it's utterly useless with the carpets upstairs.
