There's a theory that Lucas wrote the framework for Star Wars before he decided where to set it. The overall storyline dealt with the rise, fall, and redemption of a protagonist over nine movies. The first three being the rise, the second three being the fall, and the last three being his redemption and the prophesied bringing of balance to the force.

Once Lucas had written the skeleton of the idea down, he toyed with the idea of setting it in a medieval setting, but settled on a sci-fi genre. The basic storyline would have well to a medieval setting or any of several others - I can imagine someone doing such a remake down the track (a la Romeo and Juliet, etc).

Of course, 7, 8, and 9 are going to be pretty hard to make now because Vader was killed off at the end of 6 (Return of the Jedi), but Timothy Zahn has already written them as books with the blesing of Lucas, and apparently they're very good.

Haven't bothered watching Van Helsing tho ;)

    Phew!

They are indeed. The Heir to the Empire trilogy are a very good read.

No, I don't. Because the character of Van Helsing predates starwars by many years, Peter Cushing played him in The Brides of Dracula in 1960 for a start. He's been kicking popular gothic bad guys arses ever since.

Maybe the film has similarities to the plot, however the concept of Star Wars is so simplistic that it has been the staple background for films well before Star Wars was even conceived (in fact, well before Lucus was conceived too).

actually Star Wars has more in common with LOTR; and GL even stated that he based some of the characters on LOTR chars. i mean, frodo, the frightened hero; strider, the lone weirdo nobody trusts but turns out to be a badass, sauron, the embodiment of evil using saruman as a puppet to do his will, but whom is eventually destroyed......
