Ok, i need an lcd/vfd/blah display with the option to change the backlight colour between two colours (in software rather than hardware), has to be useable under *nix systems and should be drive bay mountable.

Doesn't need to have any controls attached!

    Help!

    Welcome to the boards :)

I dabbled with variable colour LCD backlight's a long time ago - if you get a display which is lit by side-mounted LED (such as matrix orbital's 122x32 normal sized graphic) then you can replace the LED with a high brightness bi-colour one, you'd just need to hook the LED up to the display's GPO's to change the colour in software then :) You'd probably have to write your own software for the display in Unix though, I don't think there's much existing support.

p.s. http://www.matrixorbital.com/pages/product_view.asp?CatID=3&ProductID=26 this is just an example, you can buy other displays which are side LED lit :)

It really needs to be something off the shelf since it's for a work project, basicly im after a dual backlight display for errors, so when everythings hunky dory the backlight is green and when somethings gone titsup.com it goes red*.

    * idea blatently stolen from brother printer :)

I doubt you'll find an off the shelf solution, but I've been wrong before. Happy hunting :)
