With all the flapping I have observed from people running Windows XP about W32Blaster virus I am made very glad that I decided to ditch Windows XP and install Linux! lol. Just hoping that one day they make it easier to install drivers in Linux!
Very good point! lol. Although I wouldn't say that killing KDE and using a non graphical commmand line to install something was that easy! But then, just to make things really interesting, you have to edit another file to get the flippin driver to work! I sometimes miss the simple days of uninstalling the old driver and then double clicking an exe and doing a restart! Oh well, such is the price we pay for quality, stability and security! lol
You must be new to Linux then. Killing things for people who what they're doing - easy. Killing things for people who don't know what they're doing - easy.
Dude, check out the nix drivers now. Even EASIER than windows drivers! You only have to click ONCE! I love you nVidia.
Video drivers should require NO clicks, as your typing it in under text mode from a fresh boot, as doing it in X or haivg been in X and then dropped out to install video drivers causes problems usually.
Okay, true enough, but I did it in X and it did work... wrong, possibly. But there's the RIGHT way, and there's the way that WORKS
As I said, I killed X (as in used the kill command! lol) to install the Nvidia driver, I found this easier than booting in none graphical to start with! Then I just restarted KDE, edited that config file thing in the X11 folder then set it to boot with X running again. I didn't mean that I found it difficult, just that I found double clicking an exe to be easier! lol. Not half as much fun though, or as rewarding. Oh, and yes I am new to Linux, as I said a couple of weeks ago! lol. Still prefer it to Windows though and I don't find Linux particularly scary as the last time I did any formal training on a pc Windows 3.1 had only just come out! lol. Used to have to use Vax Terminals when I was at college and after using the os on those things Linux is lovely! lol. Ade
Setup utility? AHHH! Kind of but you still have to go into none graphical mode and type in the file name etc as it refuses to install if X is running! Then you have to find and edit the XF86Config file to tell Linux to load the Nvidia driver and what setting to use! lol. Good job the instructions with the driver are so good really! lol. Ade
P.S. I forgot to mention that you have to be in root in order to do all of this as users don't have permissions for installing anything!
Read the man pages for the XF86 config file, or read through teh comments in said file, as it is very well documented. ANd ideally, you should boot into text mode, as opposed to just dumping out of X, as X will have run and may still have some things in memory still, or may not have finished with a file or closed it. Yes it can work, but it's just good practice to boot straight to text. You don't go playing sound while installing audio drivers do you? Well, same for video drivers. Actually to be honest, you should be booting to text mode anyways, and no auto logon. As that's more secure. Andof course teh user rule, which I rarely follow.
It's working anyway so heh . Just got to get Wine working now! lol. Think I'll give up trying to install from the downloaded RPM or the source and just install from the Mandrake CDs! Ade
