Until today I'd been using a cheap-ass kvm switch to switch my second monitor between my laptop and my 360, resulting in some interference on the display.

It occurred to me that I could use the monitor's DVI input for the laptop and the VGA for the 360, but as the laptop only has VGA out I'd need an adaptor.

I bought a VGA to DVI cable from ebay, and I can't get anything to recognise anything else with it.

I know the DVI input works as I used to use it before I had the laptop. I'm now wondering if due to the fact DVI is digital (I think) can a simple cable even do a VGA to DVI conversion?

I don't think it's as simple, like you said. The reason you can go the other way from a dvi source (pc) to a vga reciever (monitor) is that dvi also carried an analogue signal.

    The cable can't do it...

Can't you connect the laptop to VGA and the 360 to DVI (I don't know what outputs are on a 360)?

So I've been sold a VGA to DVI cable, even though such a thing can't work?!

My 360 only has the analogue output, if I had the HDMI then I'd be able to do it. I'm quite pissed off now, why does a VGA to DVI cable even exist?

it doesn't it's a dvi to vga cable, i.e it would work the other way round.

It was sold as a VGA to DVI, but anyway, I just read up on DVI connections, they can carry analogue as well, and the cable I have is equiped to do so. I'm guessing my monitor can only receive digital through its DVI input, although I can't find anything stating this in the manual.

The monitor is an AMW X1700DS

if your xbox has a HDMI connection, you should be able to hook it up to the monitor with a hdmi-DVI cable. they're electrically identical. for audio, you'll need to either buy the dongle that came with the elite, or take the housing off your component cable, to get access to the audio outputs.

Yup, seems it's only got DVI-D. Probably should have read up on DVI connections before I bought the cable...

For the record, it's a bit unusual for a DVI-D only port, all the ones I've experienced can cope with DVI-A. You had the right cable in principle, just a fussy monitor. :)

I must admit, I was surprised to learn it came with a (IMO) crippled DVI port, but then, they probably assumed that if you want analogue you'd use the VGA port, I'll just have to go back to the KVM switch and try flog the cable, anyone want one? :)

What cable is it you've got? I've got 2 DVI's on my graphics card, and VGA on my current monitor.

I'm using a classic (decent quality) VGA cable with a crappy converter atm, which leads to horrid ghosting at sharp interfaces (at window edges for example).

It's an unbranded cable, and obviously I haven't been able to use it, so I can't vouch for the image quality, but if you wanna give it a try let me know, you can have it for £5 inc postage (I paid £9).

Meh, I'll give it a go. If worst comes to worst, I'll use it on the family rig, that monitor has tiny res. PM'd. :)

i think some monitors can only take DVI-D inputs, while that cable simply do analogue-to-analogue pin conversion.
