In my experience, If you're just backing up (and don't want to create fancy menus & things then a HDD/DVD recorder is invaluable.
I remember my g/f taking about 8 months to do on PC what she could have done in a day with one of those.
Well worth the investment, and kick's Sky+'s ass.

I bought a cheap (£80) and basic Sony RDRGX350 to save any wanted PVR/VCR recordings - no HDD, no Freeview tuner, but a good player with an HDMI output & upscaling to 1080p.

Using DVD-R discs formatted in VR mode, you can do simple editing like cutting out adverts and trimming the ends, and splitting consecutive tape recordings into individual titles on DVD. If you need tighter editing accuracy you could use a RW disc and edit on a PC before re-burning.

I tried that once, with my VCR plugged to my video card.

No luck: After ~30 mins my GPU overheated and the computer restarted... The .avi file was corrupted and couldn't be played with anything.

I don't know what's wrong with this card (GF FX5600) as it's running hot even with the stock clocks (80C). Good case airflow and stock cooler etc...
