what is with AGP right angles? I just tried fitting one on my project, and had the same problem, the angle is too short, so the heatsink hits the pci slots. looks like i'll be removing the slots, i'll need to get some wick. i do have a desoldering pump, but its just too many connections to pump.

    any updates on your project?

They make different heights of them, the lowest are the only ones that would work for me.

I used a de-solder iron with pump....that worked ok but was ALOT of work, then resulted in the problems shown. I have never used the wick so I can't speak to that method.

I am still working on the project, new pics will be coming soon. Had some family things come up which have taken a lot of my time.

How does the wick work? I have never used it but it could come in handy in future projects.

Some of the joints come up well, you just put the wick over the joint and apply heat, the solder follows the wick and none is left on the joint. You gotta be careful not to burn yourself by holding the wick where it gets hot and on some connections I had to apply it a couple of times to get all the solder off.

    Long awaited update 3-3-06

First I have to apologize for the long delay. Between the regular husband/father duties, and wrecking our car and having to shop for a new one, my time has been limited.

When I left off the Motherboard had been repaired and lots of fun parts had arrived...the assembly was the fun part, mixed with frustration as always happens.

I would like to say I had a clearly defined plan that I followed the whole way through and ended up turning into a successful build. That would be a lie of course, 1/2 the time I was winging it.

www.allelectronics.com came through with all the parts I ordered. Most of these were related to the LCD display that would replace the original display.

I started with a 16x2 LCD display and some 2x header pins:

    little soldering gives us:

Everything is looking very nice. Until i realize that my dyslexia struck again, and I soldered the terminals on the wrong side....had to redo it.

The Wiring for the LCD display is my least favorite part. Rather than hack into a Printer Cable as is usually done, I decided to make my own. I used a couple 8 wire cables with connectors....this allows me to add lenghts if I chose a different mounting method. Here is a shot of the connectors:

And here is the end I used....had to solder it 3 times, dylexia struck twice:

To connect to my 2xheader pins I chose a 7 wire header connector with wires...really just a small extension type piece. I superglued the ends together after modifying them with my Dremel:

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Originally I superglued the two pieces together. I later JB welded them when the Super Glue I had turned out to be old and unreliable. I love JB weld.

And the semi-finished product, wire management still needs to take place:

    And placed inside the front:

That is all I have time to update right now....much more to come

Once the LCD display was worked out, it was time to install all the components. No build would be proper without the use of some Acrylic. I need a way to support the DVD drive and Acrylic was just the answer I needed.

First I had to buy a Bandsaw. I love excuses to buy tools:

This tool makes cutting Acrylic as easy as cutting wood. It also allows for pretty fin cuts...check out this bit I trimmed:

Thats what they call "leaving the line"

To support the DVD drive I decided to build a 3 sided step looking deal. Here are some shots of the production process:

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]
    [IMG][IMG]

The machine screws I am using to assemble it are #4 Stainless Steel. The smallest tap I have is #6, so the holes were not perfect fits. Regardless they hold well, and not much is really needed.

The basic shape becan to emerge:

With more test measuring, I had to decide how to attach the DVD drie to the new bracket. There are little threaded holes in the sides, similar to regular drives....these holes are so small I was not confident they would support any stress. I had nearly decided on Velcro when I had an idea.

I am using 0.25" Acrylic. The left side of the DVD drive is 0.25" thick. The right side is 0.50" thick. By stacking some small pieces of Acrylic I was able to creat a clamping system. Bolts pass through the top of the support, through the spacers, and through the jaws. When the bolts are tight the drive is wedged in. This makes it easy to adjust the depth of the drive for best fit. Pictures explain it better of course.

Once I had the pieces cutout, I counter sunk the hidden bolts on the bottom, and the nuts that attached to the DVD clamping system.

Preparing to glue the nuts into place:

After much dremel work the final assembly looks like this:

I am getting close, I can feel it!
