Am I the only bloody one who has had enough of these vapid morons? They're usually all hyped up like bloody insurance salesmen droning on and on about how big their egos are and how amazingly stunningly awesometastical a product is. Oddly, when you get that same product into your house you usually find out just what a load of cack it is. I mean, I know we're all kinda fat and lazy in this day and age but has it really got to the point where we're too lazy to fecking read ****? Am I getting old? or do Youtube hits and followers actually mean something now?
Video reviews. Reply girls. The fact that the top 4 most subscribed youtube channels are scum of the earth. And then there's the YT comments section. *shudder*
Ahh but see now, that has its uses. It's made all of the trolls leave forums and go on there instead, so you can't really complain about that
You don't like Jenna? But, but, but... Straight talking hottie and cute dogs?! Admittedly the swearing and video themes are a bit extreme at times but scum of the Earth? Really?
you should see that CazuaLLUk guy he just talks utter dribble, someone had to go round and build his PC for him, and ASUS still send him stuff lol!
I think we should basically round them up, put them all in the same room, then let them fight over how each one of them comes up with completely different results doing the same things.
Some review channels are great. Because they know what they are talking about for a start. I look at Techsyndicate videos they have had Asus with them recently. Lots of overviews and interesting information. As well as knowing what they are doing. Plenty unboxing videos are simply terrible.
Teksyndicate? as in Logan? I can watch that guy. I find some of his results a bit odd but yeah, he doesn't irritate me and make me want to scream.
I used to watch a lot of them when I was completely new to pc's, but now I agree with you as they are so biased and most videos are dragged out far longer than they need to be.
Logan's great. Weird sense of humor and quirky as hell. But great. Even though I can't really watch them anymore.
I can't say I watch a lot of them as they tend to annoy me, however I have looked up reviews for things I intend to buy and have frequently ended up watching the OC3D vids on youtube. The guy at least looks at all elements when doing a review and that'll do for me.
I would say that the majority of youtube channels where there is a "host" of sorts on camera are unwatchable garbage. Many of these channels have interesting information, if only I didn't have to listen to some moron tell stupid sarcastic jokes the whole time, or get really political. I might as well post some examples . . . of both good and bad. Again, one of the criteria is that the host must be on camera, so awesome stuff like CGPGrey and MinutePhysics do not count. Good: Smarter Every Day Numberphile (all hosts are great) Hit or Miss: DNews (depends on the host of the segment) Linus Tech Tips He's hard to watch sometimes, but when you realize that his ego is smaller than his desire to actually make something of worth, it gets better. 3DGameMan generally good, can get annoying VSauce If the content weren't so good I would be more annoyed by the host. Horrible: SourceFed Too annoying to watch . . . no matter how tempting the 'content' might be UhOhBro Just . . . wut? CrashCourse Sometimes interesting enough to sit through his annoying personality What I've found in general is that I can really watch and enjoy people who just care about and want to present information competently. When it becomes about ego, or play-acting the part of a host, or making excessive jokes, or getting political, or being sarcastic, I just shut it off. It's too annoying for my brain to handle. The information is interesting enough on its own! Add some graphics if you feel like you are going to lose me, not sarcasm!
Our very own Parge has been doing a couple of test video reviews - I liked the first one, not so sure about the second one...
I don't think there is anything specifically in the medium of video that makes it more susceptible to misinformation or less than full coverage when compared to written media. If you have a hack making videos its not going to be good but thats also true of written reviews. I find video reviews very useful for cases. Notably Tom Logans case reviews. I find looking at it and having someone actually show you around, the features, what can be done with it etc, much ore useful than a written review. Its as close to hands on as you can get without actually getting your hands on. For stuff like CPUs and GPUs its just a device that sits there and does nothing, so video doesn't really add anything to a review of these devices. For these I tend to just bypass the review and look at the graphs comparing it to its peers. Motherboards are a halfway house. Its nice to get a good look around it maybe see the bios in a video but written works fairly well for it. I do find unboxings absolutely inane though. Generally they add up to looking at someone unpackage something and then give you no useful information about what they have unboxed. So to sum it up bad reviewers are bad reviewers no matter what the medium. Some stuff is suited to word reviews some stuff is more suited to video reviews. Unboxings should be shot in the face.
You don't need to watch them..Linus works for a company so he's just doing his job probably pretty well paid. I'm sure some people were like 'nah, I don't want to be talking on camera'...I would be one of them.
I met Linus at Computex. Really, very nice guy and more energy than I could ever muster in a month, but he's not a 'reviewer' in the traditional sense, he just introduces everything you need to know really (same as what ROG site does).
I do too, but I put him in the hit or miss for me because I know his personality can get to some people. I think what he does is great. I'm kinda jealous of all the fun builds he gets to do. What really made me appreciate his videos is that I think he tries to be objective and fair, you can tell he loves what he does, and he's really well informed. I didn't like his stuff at first, but then I realized what I thought was ego was just enthusiasm.
