That's not uncommon in Drag racing. It's aerodynamics (unwanted lift under the car). This is one of the *many* reasons you can't just mash your foot to the floor.

He had a massive rear wing, pressing down on the rear of the car, which in turn would lift the front, which would also be lifting anyway due to the natural affects of acceleration on any 2 or even 4wd car*. Couple this with the total lack of any extra downforce on the front end ( front splitter ) which can be seen as it gets airborne, and the result is a very real hazard.

*First time I took my r/c truck out with its new power system many years ago, it did exactly the same thing and ended up cartwheeling along and into a bush. Now I run a drag-bar on the rear which is half as long as the truck- no more unwanted wheelies.. :D

Also combined with the increasing air pressure under the car the further it lifts and the faster it goes. This happens all the time with hydroplane boat racing.

I beleive I read that Hydroplane racing has the highest mortality rate of any sport in the world, easy to see why. Also the same reason I can't bring myself to buy an r/c boat- the slightest ripple and they turn into very poor performing aircraft...

    Austrian Jackass basically...

I have to say I disagree on this one. The car had front aero in the form of a splitter, which is why I'm still struggling to understand what caused this. The front splitter on any well engineered drag car will be designed to become active and provide maximum downforce after launch, when rear end grip can be sacrificed, so why did it launch in the air at a point in the run where the splitter should have been most effective?

The only plausible explanation that I can come up with is that the splitter broke up, disturbing the flow of air under and over the car, causing a big enough change in pressure under the front to lift the nose. Or, there was a strong head wind at the track that night which got under the car and did the same thing.

My dad is the doctor at the Columbia Cup every year. The boats are an amazing bit of engineering and can really only get in the water via a crane. The most dangerous boats are actually the smaller ones. They don't go as fast, but they're usually built by amateurs for a lower class of racing. If something goes wrong, they often don't stay above the water like their bigger brothers. They sink with their pilot in them and sometimes aren't found. Super dangerous stuff. Also, the bigger boats go faster, but have more mass to absorb the force of a big crash. The boats tearing apart is a good thing. It's a way for all that energy to be dissipated instead of being transferred to the pilot.

it really depends on what sort of R/C boat you go for, i have the hull of one left over from my stepdad that auto rights itself on the water ( or i will once i have new electronics for it )

if racing is your thing there is always the ''club 500'' the boats are cheap ( £46 + p&p ) and the boats are designed to be all the same so its about the driver

that said, i find the most enjoyable of my boats to sail is my tug, its relaxing in a kind of EuroTruckSimulator2 kind of way...

    "Bhutanese passport"

Listen to this, try not to laugh, laugh your ass off... ( you'll need to click play when the page loads ).

For sure, from what I've seen it's the cats that like to get airborne a bit too easilt, so I'd go with a deep-V, maybe one with the built-in self righting chamber thing down one side. Lack of places to use one is the main issue though- the river is too rough even when it's calm, and way too busy/cluttered with rotting hulls that rarely ever move due to owners who only visit for a few weeks in the summer. That either leaves the equally cluttered boat-float which is too small regardless, or the reservoir which is a trek to get to and I'd only get moaned at by the anglers for scaring the fish. I think I'm more likely to build or buy a light weight foamy aircraft, plenty of space to fly those around either at the play park or the even larger playpark in a neighbouring village...

Yep. It sounded funnier when reading the page at the same time, out of context it just sounds silly. Anyway...

Even Disney knows better than to go after Star Wars fan works, that's one genie that's well and truly out of the bottle.

Dont know if this is the case in this one, but the whole of the car act like a wing as well as just the front and rear spoilers. In old f1 cars the downforce could slam the car to the ground and it would break the airflow under the car and the car would instantly take off.
