Today I learned that Farming Simulator 2013 is actually war guilt simulator....

 

OMG.

That is insane - how can they see what the hell is going on at that speed?

 

Well, TBF that's not what he actually said.
He suggested that the surprising popularity and the production of completely non-violent games like FS and lots of other simulators and adventure games in Germany might have something to do with the fact that they historically don't have as glorified a view on war and conflict as the American audience (fighting for liberty/freedom/independence or against terrorism/evil etc.). "War" and "Germany" together always brings up the horrors of WW2, and it must be pretty uncomfortable being reminded that your ancestors were the baddies. I dunno, I'm not German.

Is it far-fetched? Maybe. The mind works in strange ways. Your culture and history having a profound impact on what you like and what you create doesn't seem that unlikely to me.

I'll admit that I probably took a more extreme interpretation on what was said, although there are definitely undertones, whetger intended or not, of an anti warfare sentiment (or at least against its current incarnation).

For what it's worth, I agree completely that games cannot be apolitical and I question if they should even attempt to be. What surprises me is that he says CoD avoids political statements (remember "no Russian"?). Almost all AAA titles have some reasonably explicit political commentary, although it tends not to be fairly unadventurous. I also agree that pushing ideas that aren't already accepted is going to be met with unfair resistance.
