Hi all, I'm looking for more consistency/reliability for my internet and network connections as my plusnet ADSL routermodem is crap for the wifi management (wifi hogs ALL bandwidth). I was originally going to go for a dd-wrt flashed router-modem device, but it appears they are few and far between. I was then told that a Vigor 120 being a pure modem with a wireless router connected could solve the problems. I don't have much spare cash. The Vigor comes up at nearly £60 which STRICTLY speaking leaves me about £10 for a desirable router.. which obviously isn't going to happen. I want a router which allows per-device bandwidth allocation etc and good bandwith wifi/wired management to help with pings/lag. I know ASUS get good rep, and I found the RT-N66U for £50 which is obviously well over budget, but i'll just have to not eat for a couple of years. Vigor 120 + RT-N66U (which according to ddwrt can be flashed), does anyone have any experience with these? Should I go down this path (the products), I am definately ridding myself of the awful modem router used currently. And what is amazon returns like? Does anyone know if these aren't suitable to help my situation (within a few of days of trying) - would I be able to return them to amazon? Anyone got experience of that? Thanks in advance for any help, guys ~P
Pete - the vigor 120 is a cracking bit of kit and I'd wholeheartedly suggest you get one. I've also got one surplus to requirements I'll happily sell, if you pop up a wanted thread in the MP!
After any suggestions and information from anyone else who is in-the-know about this sort of thing, i'll definitely get a post popped up! Thanks for the heads up.
Well - I've run a seperate modem and router combo for ages now, but I have no experience with the RT-66U so I can't help you there. I now run a Vigor 130 (for FTTC), a Draytek 2930, and a Cisco AP. The performance is great, and it's WAY more manageable than your standard provider-issued 'router'. Just for clarity, what is it you're trying to accomplish?
Basically Bandwidth management? if i'm correct... if that is a term, i'm sure there is a more technical term. Basically, on my connection (I get 13.08Mb/s Down, 0.98Mb/s Up) i've been told that I should really be able to play a game (CS/HotS/BF4) while others are using it to browse net, tumblr, tvcatchup, iplayer, etc - as it stands. As soon as someone opens an ipad and looks at something, I spike/lag. A good 500ms spike. They open up tumblr, and that lag is continuous. Now, everything in the house, bar my PC, is wireless. - I tried it with my laptop plugged in and wireless disabled. Went on tumblr, played iplayer, 4od, FB, a few at the same time while using a game on PC. My game wasn't DRASTICALLY affected. Every so often i'd have a ping spike (mainly when i was running multiple streaming things on the laptop). So i've been told that it is likely the router not being able to manage wireless and ethernet effectively and giving the wifi all the bandwidth. So essentially, I want to limit what the wifi gets in bandwidth and preferably limit each device. If any of that actually makes sense. My connection is variable, sometimes it'll go up to 15Mb/s (WOW!) and as low as 10Mb/s (i'm used to virgins 150 service, this 'slow' net is excruciating).
You should just see better performance all round with a decent router, and tweaking the bandwidth allocation should help yet further. Sounds like a sensible plan to me
