I'm making this custom case from my NES and N64. I'm going to have some lighting from some leds and CCFL's powered by an old ATX PSU I have. The problem is it doesn't have an AC outlet because I want to run both the consoles off a power bar inside the case, it's roomy. I was thinking, why not cut up the cable going to the AC, and splice another section of power cable onto it, and wire it up to an outlet to plug the powerbar into?

I would be a new PSU, but I"m hella cheap, and while a 80 PSU would be nice, I'd rather put it in my comp.

My question on this is can anyone tell me how to wire this up? Some diagrams would be great.

    |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

My other question is to minimise cable clutter outside the case, I want to only have 2 cables coming out, the power to the power bar and the AV cable to the back of the TV. Right now it runs the N64's and NES's AV cables to the TV and I have to manually switch them. (I'm not running any of the mods I have planned yet)

So, this goes out to the electronics gods, and I've tried searching Google for it, but I can only find commercial products. What I want to do is switch the AV signal with a toggle switch, but I'm not sure of what kind I would need. (nb. They are the standard Red & White audio cables and the Yellow {analog I believe} video cable)

    1. Can you offer an explanation of how to do this with diagrams and explanation?

    2. I am not sure if these are the parts needed to do this, but I need one of these to go to the TV from the box and the required connectors for them, 3 for red, white, and yellow, with 2 of each being the input from the consoles, and the remander being output.

This might be able to be used, or just single ones, but thats not really important.

    3. The switching would be the hard part, as I have absolutely no idea of how to do this. This is how I'm stumped.

The power question and the AV switch will make my the happiest kid on the block, but the only way you can do that is to help this lonely shutin

Thanks in advance, on these, though the AC one shouldn't be too hard, I just cant find any schematics or diagrams.

with the av cables you should be able to run them both into a splitter (in reverse) then on the other side have a lead going to the TV.

This should work as long as they aren't both turned on at the same time.

    Hope this helps a bit

    Kinda

My idea is to be able to have them both on, so that I can leave a game at it's current possition, switch it to the other system, and back and forth and so on.

I also thought of having a third set od AV cables that enter through the back, that go from my DVD player to the box, then I can switch between them all from one location. If anyone can help on this it would be great.

    Thanks

Yeha, I'm aware of the ability to buya 2-12 way AV switch, but what I'm interested in is building my own ;) I'm trying to stay away from buying most of my components.

But thanks anyways, if this doesn't work, I'll buy one.

ok if you want to make your own (you can get cheap ones now, but they probably won't suit the box you want to put it in) I'll qucikly do a diagram for you..

You can use relays like the other post said but then you have supply power and so on.

say you want 2 video connections just to make it simple take the 2 video outs connect the shielding together with the middle wires take the one from the tv and connect it to the common of a douple pole double throw switch on one side(I think that's what they are called) and connect the other 2 wires to either side of the wire this way only one is on at a time (do same for audio). for more connections you will need more throws for stereo sound you'll need 3 pole.

    v-out 1 TV v-out2
    \ | /
    \ _______| ________/
    | |
    | switch |
    ---------------------------
    O
    /
    /
    /

(sorry about the bad diagram can't really do ascii art)
with the switch this way v-out2 would be turned on
the double pole will be same as above but with audio on the other side,
it's hard to explain without drawing a proper picture.

this is what the back would look like
    ________
    | | |
    a-out1 | O | O |v-out1
    | | |
    tv audio | O | O |tv video
    | | |
    a-out2 | O | O |v-out2
    | | |
    -------------

say the left is for audio and the right is for video middle Os is the where the tv is connected to

if you have any questions please reply

hope this helps, it will be slightly different for stereo sound.

the way the switch works is by moving the bit of metal in the middle, all shielding for video is joined and all shielding for audio is joined but NOT shielding for video and audio joined together.

    cheers, Brett

Thanks, I"m familiar in how switches work, but I"d perfer to do it with relays, because then I will be able to have, the DVD player connected too., btw, I"m still tryign to design my switch.

I think most of my worries are solved, because I found a 3 input 1 output AV switch at all electronics for 7.50, but still under 10 bucks canadian, which is what I would be paying to buy the parts, so this will probably work. I can then hack it apart to see how it works, and it's my gut feeling that it uses relays to switch them.

I can't access the AE site right now, but I found it while searching for AV splitters, on the second page or so, I'll edit this if I find it.

Before I found this, I was also thinking of some AV splitters to go from the relays to the connector on the back of the box to be leading to the TV.

Thanks alot everybody, but can anyone help me out with the wiring of the 120v AC cord to the power supply, I want to splice it off to another connectof to plug in a power bar.

    1. This should still be safe, wouldn't it :)

    2. Can anyone detail to lines and how to do it safely? The Hot, live, or what ever it it refered to is the Left Hand or fat bar when looking at the Male Plug right? abd then the Right hand or skinny bar is neutral right? Then what should I wire the ground to? This is a standard PC cord that I will be splicing into, running into the PSU.

Thank You :D If I can figure this out I will be very happy.

Sorry can't help you there, power is different in Australia.

a link that I always find useful is www.epanorama.net they have heaps of great electronics stuff

I got allelectronics site working, my ISP was overloaded.

    AV Switch

Looks great, 3 input, just like I need, and I'll get it with my order of 100 diodes and some misc switches.

    Thanks

This is a partial bump to get the rest of the info I need.

Below is the pic I made of what I think will happen.

What I need to know is,

    1. Is this safe?

    2. Would this strain the cord too much?

    3. How to go about doing it safely?

    4. Which wire relates to which spoke on the socket?

    Thanks,

    Shwang
