Hey, I'm thinking about vinyl dying my beige molex connectors black. I've never vinyl dyed anything before and want to know if it will come out alright and if it's sensible to scratches because they might take a beating when I put the pins back in ;). Thanks.

vinyl dye is the way to go, it is much more flexible than other spray paints. I painted my mouse cable with vinyl dye and it has taken a lot of abuse and not a scratch yet. I imagine if you really rake the cables across a part of the metal frame of your PC you could scratch it but it should be fine.

Well I'm going to be taking all the pins out, dying the connectors and connecting the pins back in again. Thanks for the replies guys, never thought about dying cables before, sounds like a freakin good idea, heh. Any local stores in North America that you guys know that sell quality black vinyl dye? I don't want to order it online....thanks again.

One more question, when you dye wires, doesn't it smudge on your skin if you rub it kinda hard?

Pep boys has the best selection of vinyl dye in my area. Plasticote is a brand I highly recommend. Once the vinyl dye cures (and it cures/dries very fast by spray paint standards) you cannot smudge it... it creates a thin plastic-like layer of material.

I have never seen it in any home improvement place (Home Depot or Lowes) where you find most of your good spray paint. The best place to look is a good autoparts store in the paintcare section. I think the stuff was originally created to paint interior stuff like dashboards and such. Good stuff and if you know where to look you can find it. Buy a can or two when you do find it because, if your area is like mine, if you run out, it's a hike to get more... :hehe:

Strane as it may seem the easiest place to find it has been WallyWorld (aka Wal-Mart). Look in the automotive section.

Pep-Boys is my source for vinyl dye. (Labeled Vinyl Paint)

  13. Why not take the wires out and then apply the dye to just the plug instead of having to put tape on the ends?

    Quick and dirty.

The only reason mine are black are the steath the cables in a dark case. But removing the wires first would make it look professional.

I got mine at Walmart, except the can doesn't say "vinyl dye". It's in the automotive section though with car seat repair stuff. Wish I could remember what they call it, mines packed in a box burried until next painting season:grr:
