That is awesome. We've just had the same from our BT ADSL now the exchange has been upgraded to 21CN.
The article says that both 20Mb and 30Mb customers will have their services boosted to 60Mb, so 20Mb customers (like me) look to be in for a real treat with TRIPLE the bandwidth. As much as I hate Virgin (with a passion) and as much as this is a transparent publicity stint, I'm interested to see if it actually materialises and what it'll be like. If there's one thing I've learned in my tenure as a Virgin customer, it's that there's always a catch.
Not 100% on what they actually change, it could well be a fibre upgrade, but suddenly the whole exchange has gone from 8Mb to 24Mb, even if it isn't LLU'd I can't complain!
Woop i have been waiting for this. Last time i was on like 2mb or something lame like that and the upgrade was to 10mb for free.
No, 21CN is ADSL2+ enabled, allowing theoretical 24mbit speeds. FTTC (ie: Infinity) is currently 40mbit, with some 100mbit upgrades going round certain areas. 21CN is probably as good as it well get for rural areas unfortunately. Great, so now my parents have 60Mbit and I have 8.8Mbit
Indeed! Can't sniff at triple broadband speeds though, we went from 6Mbps to 17Mbps overnight, gratis. Until they LLU the exchange there's nothing more you can do - no Virgin in the village either.
Yay 100mb! I was going to go for 100mb but decided on 50 since I thought you know, that's probably fast enough but now YAY.
Yeah, 21CN is a good upgrade - and certainly helps if you're close enough to the exchange to benefit from the speeds. My problem is the opposite - I should get a 17Mbit+ connection, but the internal wiring in my block of flats is so poor that it drops the speed right down to 8.8. BT are literally installing our FTTC cabinet right now, so I'm hoping a switch to FTTC will give me a 20Mb+ speed again.
