I'd just like to say a big F YOU to Virgin, it's only £2.25 but still, the cheeky gits! I've only been with them for two months, double my speed will you, but only for a price increase! They're also taking two hours off of evening rates (Now 7 - 7 instead of 6 - 6) and increasing their already outrageously priced minute prices. (6.1p for evening calls vs 1.05p for BT and 9.94p for evening vs 7.05p for BT). I wouldn't mind, I've never actually seen Virgin download faster than 2mbps and I'm meant to be on a bloody 50mb line, I used to get 1mb download from my 8mb Sky line! I wish BT Infinity would hurry up so there would at least bet some bloody competition. Rage. EDIT: Also, the cheeky sods on the back when listing how awesome they are, apparently Fibre Optic Broadband is as standard on Virgin, but BT don't do it in all areas! Well, neither do bloody Virgin!
If you're paying for 50Mb and receiving 2 then I assume you've called them to cancel the contract as they're clearly not providing what you asked for? I'm with Virgin, but get the full 50Mb at all times, though use BT for phones.
yep - no hassles with Virgin and I don't mind the hike in price as there is a trade off with the free double speed. Orange, or Everything Everywhere, are the arseholes for raising their prices via text and the message saying its only an extra £4 per month so shouldn't be too much to worry about. Hence why I'm now out of contract!
I don't mind this one bit. We phoned virgin and asked if we could have it installed at our hotel, they basically told us to get bonked and they don't provide there services to businesses. Then we had a guy staying who works at virgin and 5 days later they were installing virgin without a problem . I believe we have the 50mb and the highest speed i've seen is probably about 6mb/s though
You sure you're not got Virgin National (ADSL)? I get the full speed of the 30MB of my cable broadband as promised. Sounds like you've got problem with your connection somewhere!
I do believe you need to give them a call, you simply arent getting the connection speed that yopu should be. My parents are on the cheapest connection and get it with no issues. My cousin is in the same situtation as you. And he gets 45mbps easy. Not that he even needs it. So make that call and either get it fixed, cancel and or get some money back.
When we say 2mbps are we talking actual download speeds? I mean, on Speed test it's near that mark (edit - the 50mb mark), but real world use I've never actually seen anything download at much past 2 or 3 mbps and the time it did go past 3mbps it actually was once time.
Have you checked your connection upload/download with Speedtest.net etc. They usually give a reasonable read on the connection speed. You will never get a full 50meg download speed in real world terms as the the other end will control how fast it sends out the data packets. Obviously if you pay for a service then you will get a faster speed download. In real world terms having a high connection speed overal is designed for various computers/devices connected to it.
When you say never downloaded faster than 3mbps, do you mean that, or do you mean 3MBps? 50mbps is only 6-7MBps as far as I'm aware.
Just so you know 2Mbps is a '2 meg' connection, you have 50Mbps which is only downloading at 2MB/s. (The capitals make a difference!) I'd guess it's the download source/server that's not giving you the max speed as I get downloads from usenet at 3.6MB/s from my 30Mbps connection.
Spot on. 50Mbps is 6.25 MBps, and then when you allow for maybe 10% of that being networks overheads (every computer in a route to a server has to know where to send data to and from) you get near to 5.6 MBps.
I believe either Steam is throttled on Virgin 50 slightly, or their servers are a bit overloaded (or both). For a good download test, try using Origin to download something (the ME3 Beta for instance if you didn't already have anything) and report the speed results. I usually see a 5.5-6.5 MB/s speed with that, and the results are enjoyable to say the least .
