i've got two computers that i'm supposed to be fixing for other people, both running vista 32-bit. on one, i can access websites if i enter the IP but not if i enter the URL. on the other i have the same problem, but only when i'm connected through wireless. wired connection works fine.

i've reinstalled the network adapters, tried using the openDNS entries, done netsh winsock reset, done ipconfig /flushdns, done netsh int ip reset. any other ideas?

Have you tried unticking ipv6 protocol in the network properties? I can't remember if it was dns issues I was having, but it seemed to cure whatever problem it was. May help.

There's also ipconfig /renew, if you haven't tried it.

It sounds like they're not picking up the dns from dhcp. Try setting one to a static ip address and give it the router's address for the gateway and preferred dns server, just to see if it is dhcp.

Is there any firewall up and running?

i tried statically setting the dns entries to point to openDNS, the problem persisted. there are no firewalls running.

i ended up just reinstalling vista from scratch this morning, i got sick of troubleshooting.

    Try this...

This is the workaround for SPI (if that is indeed your problem).

    - Click start
    - Type: cmd
    - Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
    - Click Run As Administrator
    - Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
    - Press enter
    - Restart your computer

I had the same issue on my old router, which I have to do this every time I do a vista install on my network, no issues with newer router tho :).
