I'm getting this error trying to install SP1.
I've tried every solution I can find on the net, and had M$ support on with me for 2hours last night to no solution...

Anyone got any help they want to shed?!

i have the same problem on my 64bit, my 32bit installed no hastles,

i googled for fixes, ans there are a couple of things you can try, but they did not work for me, the only fix appears to be a fresh install of vista, wich i am loathed to do. MS must fix this issue. i can download other updates, just not sp1.

try the googled suggestions, but dont hold your breath.

I tried every googled solution to no avail. Sounds like i'm in exactly the same situation as you, since others are installing fine! So fed up...

After some research, it sounds like crucial Vista file are damaged. It could be because of WinVista bug or the act of a driver of a decide you installed.
Either way, I hared that SP1 fixes this, so it doesn't occur again.... Howvere.. huh.. you need SP1 that you cannot get...

    Try this:
    open CMD as REAL administrator
and type and execute: chkdsk c: /f
    Reboot

NOTE: "C:" is the drive letter that Vista is running... feel free to do something else while it perform it's tasks (however you must understand that your programs or driver may crash during the process as you are performing a system fix on important crucial tasks.
This step can take several minute.

If this doesn't help, you must re-install Vista. However this time be VERY careful on what you install on your computer, and make sure that all drivers that you install are the latest versions.

chkdisk has already been run :(
and sfc which finds no problems...

I'll live without SP1 for now - havent the time to do a re-install just at the moment!

I can definitely say that doing it on a fresh install works flawlessly, I did it last weekend.

Not the most useful for your problem but at least you know it works.

Yeah... it's a rubbish solution, but funnily enough, seems to work for nearly all Windows problems... ;)
Anyway, i'll reinstall and shove SP1 on before installing anything else whenever i get around to it...

Actually to have SP1, you need to install all your drivers and update Windows Vista to the max. :)

Ah right - i read that SP1 had all of the latest updates included (if you were installing it fresh!)
Still - i'll whack it on before i install anything else :)

well there seams to be a mass of people with the same issue,

im sure there will be a patch to fix this in the next month, so ill wait for that to install sp1, or just have to do a clean install.

you can install over your installation, and it will fix core file errors, but keep your data and settings. but do this at your own risk

Actually what you can do is upgrade Vista to Vista... however if this problem is linked to the registry,... it might care it to the new Vista upgrade.

Actually, as it happens, i can't "upgrade" Vista to vista - it gives me an error...
Hopefully there will be a fix, but who knows...

I was having problems with installing SP1, whacked in the disc, "upgraded" to Vista then it installed fine... Though I would suggest this is saved for a last resort though as it takes for ever and if your like me... it will take you a whiel to get everything back how you like it. :dremel:
