just got myself a new rig for someone. I decided to go for vista on this one. Mostly at the persons request. I build and work as usual. The system posts and works great. I put the vista ultimate disk on the drive and looks normal. it loads into windows installer I get the pretty wavy background and a working cursor. never get any dialogue boxes. I think it might be a hardware issue and vista is just being weird. so I pull out an old XP disk and install that. Works perfectly but I don't have a key for that. don't really want to buy one since I have Ultimate. I try to install vista from within XP and it starts to load and copy files but then says couldn't copy files please try the install again. I ma really confused any suggestions?

Try leaving it for like 20 minutes. Sounds weird, but on my crap rig the installer loaded straight away and on my uber rig (sig), it took like 5 minutes for the cursor, language selection etc. to show up. I think it has something to do with the drivers for the hardware being new.

I had a problem installing Vista Home Premium using my Lite-On SHM-165P6S DVD drive, it just wouldn't read the disk. Burning a copy of the install disk and using that worked, and was easier than buying a new DVD drive or searching for firmware.

I think there is just issues with the DVD firmware support in Vista. I am still having issues with this drive. Where can I find firmware for the LG drives. I can't find the vista firmware for my drive. not on their site.

I'd suggest here would be the best place to look for firmware updates for your specific model

It's worth bookmarking their main page actually, 'coz they usually have the most up-to-date firmware for most makes of optical drive  :cooldude:
Clicking on the 'Download firmware' link in the left menu should be your first priority, then select the letter pertaining to your drive manufacturer's initial at the top of the new page.
If that doesn't turn up anything... there's always the 'Download Search' option in the left menu?

If you can't find what you need on there (however unlikely it is you'll find it anywhere else)... you could try Open Drivers, Driver Files, Totally Drivers, or PC Drivers?

Those carry drivers for many different types of computer hardware :thumb:

thanks trying to retrieve the model number now. Being quite difficult I have this feeling it is an GSA-H60N not on that page and I am still not sure what to do with that.

Hmm, maybe this is why it doesn't install on my machine either...

I keep getting an error during the 'expanding files' stage of the installation... it stays at 0% for a while then bombs out saying that files are missing or corrupt!

    Time to update the firmware...

that is the exact error that is come up with if widows thinks it is compatible but the firmware is not. I got that error all the time wile attempting to install vista on that machine. swap the drive or the firmware.

ASUS DVD-drive does not cause issue with Vista, well.. I don't know about ALL of them, but I have 3 of them (SATA and 2xIDE), all purchased in different years, different models, and Vista has no issue on them.
You can buy the older models for like ~35$ Canadian, 55$ the new ones.

They are fairly quiet (for an optical drive), and very rarely makes a bad burn. The tray closure is a bit lound (not the motor, just the mounting of disk system, it makes this "clug" noise when the tray is fully closed.) on my taste, but if your aiming at quiet computing, it won't be any discomfort at all. In fact I think all drives has this thing.

From I learned on all Windows setup is, if the setup doesn't run, that means Windows sees that SOMETHING in your comp is really not compatible or NOT working at 100%. Also, don't try a force install that makes things worse, you will get an extreme unstable system.
