Right, Technically I probably should have put this in software, however somehow it fits more here (feel free to prove me wrong and move) VMware are offering free licences for VMware Server, and VMware ESXi, up to 10 and 999 licences respectively.. I'm just getting into virtualization and for free it seems like a pretty damn good deal.. So, did anyone else know about this, does anyone currently use either product, and lastly does anyone see any point in upgrading to a paid licence for either product? Edit: looks like software was the right place then...
Free licences for VMware server? Grab them. Grab them now. VMware server is rather good. I use it quite a bit in work.
Yeah, and ESXi, I've got 10 licences for server, 3 Windows 7 Linux, and 50 licences for ESXi... I know I'll never EVER need that many but it can't hurt to have a load
NAFAIK, only got made free just before last christmas time... either way I'm sure most people don't know it's free as most virtulization solutions cost more than most people make in a month..
wasn't server always free but not workstation ? I know workstation is just better and has more features, i just never understood why it wasnt the opposite
Server is designed to basically a "sit there and do your job" solution much like esx, but workstation/fusion is more for occasional use when whatever job you're doing requires a virtual appliance. Only differences I can see with server and esx is the former is a hosted solution (in that it requires a host OS windows or *nix to run and is an application on top of that) whereas esx is a bare-metal hypervisor (is host OS independant, it runs as the host OS in a way.) And as regards to ESXi, something I do quite love is the ability to have it run off a SD card or usb stick or any other "embedded" method as it only occupies 32mb, so you can run a server effectively diskless and have it link up to a SAN for much goodness
