(Apologies if there's already a thread about this - I couldn't find one.)

The Escapist is having a 2010 March Mayhem competition in order for people to vote for their favourite game developer. Currently, Valve are up against Zynga. Zynga, if you didn't know, is the creator of bland applications such as Farmville and Mafia Wars, that you may have seen spamming up your Facebook page. They are also self admitted scammers who at one point deliberately put shady software into their games in order to make more money. You'd think there'd be no contest, right?

Unfortunately, no. Through rallying their Facebook hordes, Zynga have already managed to dispatch Infinity Ward, Rockstar North and Square Enix, the creators of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy respectively:duh:, and there's a good chance they may be able to take down Valve as well. Only by banding together can we defeat the evil that is Zynga, and save the gaming world from its spammy, casual blight!

Okay, a bit carried away, but seriously, vote Valve:

Also, your vote is counted twice if you make a post about it on Twitter. Twitter format for this final round must be as follows to be counted:

    Valve
    I voted for @steam_games in Round 6 of The Escapist's March Mayhem: http://bit.ly/aANIUR #escMM.

    BioWare
    I voted for @biofeed in Round 6 of The Escapist's March Mayhem: http://bit.ly/aANIUR #escMM.

I think this contest is rigged. Valves games are too fun to quit to go vote for silly surveys.

God bless Valve, they are really helping Pc gaming. I also respect them for porting steam and some games over to Mac's.

Small update. Valve has been making steady headway and we are now winning!!! I did a search here so I wouldn't start a redundant thread, but I've been spreading the news far and wide.

    Vote Valve!

If Valve could bring games out when they say they would, and not f*ck-up every single game launch on Steam, I'd vote for them.

Yes, they certainly do mess up every game launch...

Serious question. Do you actually use Steam?

How did zynga even get that initial bulkhead of votes? Did they spam them out of facebook communities or something?

Voted valve, anyway. To those going "lal don't care", read up about the escapist. It's not a dead-end website, it's influential; the competition matters insofaras any arbitrary internet poll can matter.

    Yes, I actually use Steam..

Serious question. Have you ever had a game unlock on time and without complications?

    I'd say 75% of the games I've pre-ordered have:

    a) not been available for hours after "launch"
    b) had to be re-downloaded entirely
    c) would crash on launch
    d) would become unavailable after decryption
    e) would not decrypt
    f) would not install properly and thus won't launch

voted for Valve. only seen friends to play Farmville for less than a month before giving up, but have seen Steam friends playing CSS for 5 years, that ought to mean something.

It's true with newly released titles, but to my mind that's just analogous to the bugs, delays and problems that shelf copies suffer. Bioshock's widescreen bug et al? It's just games generally. Games are always fuxxed on release; Steam allows games to get to you faster, so the syndrome is more noticeable. There's less time to react. Bad Company 2 had floods of people ranting and raving because the servers didn't work - 5 hours after they went up. Me, I just waited a week, like a sane person, and when I played it it worked fine.

And pre-emptively, yes, it's only with new releases. I've reinstalled my steam collection (~30 titles) countless times and they always work first time if I've activated and played them before, on several different machines and operating systems. So, Steam works for me; if it doesn't for you, you might want to look into that, or contact tech support, or something. Or be more specific as to what you've had go wrong.
