Hi, as a Dutchman living abroad, it'd be nice to use the dutch TV's netstreams. These are limited to dutch IP-adresses though. I know some of you use VPN's to watch Iplayer and the likes from abroad, and I wondered how you do that. I had hoped it would be like a proxy, I pay the rent, and receive an IP-Adress, a port and a password and that's it. Of course it isn't. As far as I understand it, most VPN-providers install some software which lets you connect to their server. My viewing device would however be a TV or a Raspi2 running Openelec (Kodi), so I would have to connect my router to the VPN. This needs a number of certificates and the likes. Now on that router I cannot install the software provided by the VPN-service. Is there an (understandable) way of doing this or is the only (simple) solution to run everything via the PC?
Most VPN services will have a method of connecting to their servers using OpenVPN which is available on all platforms. The windows clients are there for the sake of user friendliness but aren't actually necessary. I think that most routers can accommodate VPNs as well without too much fuss. Although your average consumer unit supplied by the ISP might not.
As theshadow says, many routers will have a facility to allow you to connect them to a VPN, what model is yours? I've had good experiences with Dryatek routers at work, but they're a little pricey for home use. I've got an Asus RT-AC66U which has an Open-VPN client, although I've not tested it yet.
A very brief look at the spec of your router and there doesn't seem to be VPN connectivity included with that model. I think if you can use something like a Pi2, it is probably the cheapest thing to do. Find a vpn with linux support such as private internet access or tor guard, then set up on the pi and go. Of course if you use just the Kodi operating system, I doubt a desktop is included so configuring and connecting to the vpn would have to be done through the terminal, which won't be as easy as doing something in Windows. Its not too difficult but you need to be able to find out the required commands. Your other alternatives would be to get your own router and set it up with the vpn and use that to either replace your ISPs router or use your own router behind the ISPs one. A lot of VPNs have android clients so maybe a cheap second hand tablet that can support a HDMI out could be a possibility. That would be a very straight forward solution.
i've always used Hola in chrome to watch tv shows from other countries. if it don't work i just select the country i want to let it think im in and boom works fine use it allot of netflix n crackle.
I would recommend uninstalling Hola at your earliest convenience: it's not exactly secure nor safe, and the people operating it are rather shady.
